Or is the Swiss attitude that little people need to learn about dangers from their mistakes?

The items are cheaper in Germany - they seem to double the figure to get the Swissie amount e.g. you'll pay CHF 100 (+ postage) for something that costs EUR 50
There's also http://www.walzkidzz.com/ for older kids, lots of stuff, again more expensive when you buy from Switzerland, but I don't think they have any shops so you have to buy on-line
If you compare one product:

CHF 119 + 6.95 postage (ordering on-line from Switzerland)
EUR 59.95 (ordering on-line from Germany) - you'll need to change your location on the website to Germany to see this price. This converts to approx CHF 92
So in this case you would save about CHF 34 by going up to Germany, and the more you buy, the more the trip would be worth it. Plus you would probably do more than enough other shopping anyway to more than cover the cost of petrol
This is pretty typical for Switzerland, if you ever look at the price on clothes (e.g. in Zara) where it's listed for various countries, Switzerland is quite a bit more expensive. I'm not complaining as we earn more and pay less taxes here, just pointing out that if you cross over the border you'll get many of the same items quite a bit cheaper...
You might want to visit the Toys R US in Lausanne.

Ikea also sells socket protectors and there is a location in Lausanne. I know they sell gates at Ikea but I didn't like those models.
Just like everywhere in the world, attitudes towards safety vary and so will the extent to which one will childproof their home.
You mean the choice for baby walz, or in general? I would have thought there was just a single warehouse somewhere in Germany that ships to all locations, so the available stock would be the same, but maybe I'm wrong.
Yes we drove to Germany. There are 2 big baby stores in Konstanz right near each other. Choice in both was better than Switzerland - all items in all colours were in stock and didn't need to be ordered.
Online I was given a different item when the size I ordered wasn't in stock They said that they *contacted* me but I didn't respond, so they sent the other item. I needed to get it back in the box (not easy - pop up cot) and pay for the postage to return it.
