Swiss Mothercare/Baby store?

We are about to move to Montreux in May and have a 10 month old girl who is about to start crawling. I am planning on buying things like stair gates and table corner protectors in the UK. But obviously I can't get Swiss electrical socket (plug) covers/protectors in the UK. Are there any Mothercare type stores in the Montreux area?

Or is the Swiss attitude that little people need to learn about dangers from their mistakes?

Thanks,

a first time mum x

I can't help you for Montreux but electrical socket protectors are definitely known here. I think and hope you'll find everything you need to child proof your appartment once you are in Switzerland.

Order on line here www.baby.walz.com they will have everything you will need.

You can get socket covers and table corners in the larger migros and coop stores here.....

Stair gates and stuff you can get from ikea there is one in lausanne i think (or there abouts)

good luck

You don't even need to go to a specialized baby shop to get them. We got ours in MParc and I'm sure Hornbach, Jumbo or even IKEA stock them.

Great Thanks for all the useful advice. I'm glad to know you can buy baby stuff from the supermarkets, as I am use to Tesco which seems to sell everything under the sun!

Or plan a trip up to Germany, e.g Konstanz

The items are cheaper in Germany - they seem to double the figure to get the Swissie amount e.g. you'll pay CHF 100 (+ postage) for something that costs EUR 50

There's also http://www.walzkidzz.com/ for older kids, lots of stuff, again more expensive when you buy from Switzerland, but I don't think they have any shops so you have to buy on-line

Baby Walz is based in Germany, so they are cheaper, and we ordered baby items from them many times, and NEVER paid 100frcs for postage, infact we paid between 5 and 10frcs for delievery which if you think about is alot cheaper than driving there because you would pay alot more using petrol

Hi Sutter, no I didn't mean you pay CHF100 for postage

If you compare one product:

http://www.baby-walz.com/SyEngine.ph...erkunft=teaser

CHF 119 + 6.95 postage (ordering on-line from Switzerland)

EUR 59.95 (ordering on-line from Germany) - you'll need to change your location on the website to Germany to see this price. This converts to approx CHF 92

So in this case you would save about CHF 34 by going up to Germany, and the more you buy, the more the trip would be worth it. Plus you would probably do more than enough other shopping anyway to more than cover the cost of petrol

This is pretty typical for Switzerland, if you ever look at the price on clothes (e.g. in Zara) where it's listed for various countries, Switzerland is quite a bit more expensive. I'm not complaining as we earn more and pay less taxes here, just pointing out that if you cross over the border you'll get many of the same items quite a bit cheaper...

I found the prices in the Swiss Baby Waltz catalogue/online to be generally 25% more than the German prices. We also got the German VAT back. The choice in Germany is much better too and everthing I wanted was in stock.

Do you know what kind of place you are moving into and that you will for sure have stairs? If so, stair widths do vary so buying a gate in advance might be a mistake. We bought gates here and they had a good selection at Toys R Us.

You might want to visit the Toys R US in Lausanne.

Ikea also sells socket protectors and there is a location in Lausanne. I know they sell gates at Ikea but I didn't like those models.

Just like everywhere in the world, attitudes towards safety vary and so will the extent to which one will childproof their home.

Didn't think of the VAT - another reason to go to Germany. I assume you had to go there, and you didn't order on-line?

You mean the choice for baby walz, or in general? I would have thought there was just a single warehouse somewhere in Germany that ships to all locations, so the available stock would be the same, but maybe I'm wrong.

Yes we drove to Germany. There are 2 big baby stores in Konstanz right near each other. Choice in both was better than Switzerland - all items in all colours were in stock and didn't need to be ordered.

Online I was given a different item when the size I ordered wasn't in stock They said that they *contacted* me but I didn't respond, so they sent the other item. I needed to get it back in the box (not easy - pop up cot) and pay for the postage to return it.

Your right i am sorry, and if you look at it like that you will also save money because at the border you get money back on, but don`t forget to get your receipt stamped
