I frequently travel and purchase in online shops that use non-CHF currency. This includes travel bookings, for accommodations in hotels, flight tickets, trains, hotels, meals and shopping in foreign countries etc.
What is the best “Swiss-based Neo bank” or a regular Swiss bank offering Neo banking services that offers both debit cards (used physically / in person purchases, e.g., shopping, meals, transportation while travelling in foreign countries) and credit cards (used for online bookings and reservations in foreign currencies) that:
Has the lowest foreign exchange rates (for both debit and credit cards)
Is secure and reliable (Secure3D or two-factor authentication, Mobile App in English, Good interface, Less frequent system glitches or downtime etc.)
TWINT functionality would be nice to have (ability transfer from my main bank account)
Some decent level of support (e.g., card blocking or freezing, ability to set region where can card be used, card limits, notifications sent when transaction is made etc.)
Don’t really care much about cash withdrawals or foreign bank / wire transfers
Please share your experiences.
A few major Swiss Neobank offerings I found include:
I spend EUR, USD and CHF and some minor currencies depending on the travelling. The best neo bank for me is wise in combination with Interactive brokers and a 3rd party credit card like Cembra, which is free with cashback.
I change Forex at IBKR which is the cheapest place on earth to exchange currencies. Then I send it to wise where I have physical accounts in CHF, EUR and USD and can store almost any currency I like.
So, it is not a Swiss neo bank and an external free credit card with cashback, but it is probably the cheapest solution.
Even if you don’t use IBKR for Forex, wise is a bit more expensive but still way cheaper than Swiss banks. IBKR doesn’t like it if you use it exclusively for Forex, I have much more business there.
Unfortunately, there is no one bank that covers all your requirements. Additionally, none of the four banks that you mention will offer a credit card (only debit card).
I personally use Wir. Lowest foreign exchange rate for their debit card and ticks all other boxes except the English language. Their mobile app is in three out of the four national Swiss languages.
I used to had Neon as my daily and travel account, but since they increase their exchange fees back on May 2025, I switched to Alpian. Honestly, I still prefer the Neon app, but Alpian offers a free account in CHF, USD, EUR, and GBP. When needing a different currency, their exchange rate is still much better than other options in the Swiss market.
This is incorrect, UBS have a key4 credit card with 0.5% flat on foreign currency rates and use the Mastercard exchange rate, I just checked this with their client advisors like last week.
The Prepaid credit card is free, but there is a yearly price for the Standard and Premium Key4 cards.
Scroll down to the Key4 credit cards:
You are right about Bank WIR, this is also what I’ve heard from others. I am also looking to open a Bank WIR account the standard one to leverage their Debit Mastercard when travelling abroad.
I believe if you open the Key4 account it has no maintenance fees, you will get a Debit card free with no monthly cost. On top of that you can get their Prepaid credit card which costs 0 CHF/month, top it up and use it as you like.
I have their Prepaid card, its very easy to instantly reload it from your current / savings account in their e-banking platform (Mobile App / PC). This prepaid credit card actually functions more like a debit card, since you top it up with actual money from your account, and it doesn’t have a credit amount / limit as normal credit cards do. I mostly use this Prepaid card for monthly subscriptions like Netflix etc., while main main credit card is always kept frozen, and I only unfreeze it temporarily when I want to shop online, book a hotel, flight etc.
Also I believe Key4 debit card does allow taking out cash for free at UBS ATMs.
So if you prefer a proper bank, UBS key4 is the way to go. This is their top digital banking package to compete with Neo banks.
In essence the UBS package of choice should be: UBS key4 banking account package with debit card (Visa or Mastercard) + Prepaid credit card (top it up at your own choice, plus there is a feature to freeze it to avoid misuse).
You’re right. The credit card is part of their CHF 14 / month offering of key4. I was assuming you were looking for minimal fees possible. But I checked, you didn’t mention that in your original post.
What I mean’t by proper is that, it has branches, ATM machines, has physical presence. By the way I did a quick comparison using Google Gemini for UBS Key4 vs their standard UBS Me Banking package, here are the details for both credit and debit cards.
Seems the Key4 debit card is still subject to 2% foreign transaction fees like their normal debit card, so that is where Bank WIR’s debit card would help with 0% foreign currency fees.
Secondly, for the prepaid credit card with Pure option from your screenshot (that’s not a Key4 card), they still charge 1.75% processing surcharge for that card. However, there is a Key4 prepaid credit card somewhere which states the same 0.5% transaction fees, probably need to call them and check, cannot find any picture or information of it on their site.
Meaning UBS debit cards no matter what package you take 2% flat foreign transaction fees. For UBS credit cards then Key4 is the best option.
Bottom line is that make sure your debit and/or credit card have they Key4 logo written on them so you get 0.5%, otherwise they are the standard ones with 1.75% surcharge.
