What the farmer doesn't know, he wont eat
Z eit ist am wertvollsten, wenn man sie nicht hat
Original: Ziit isch am wertvollschtä, wämmer si nüd hät
Time's most valuable when you don't have it.
A uf alten Pfannen lernt man kochen.
You learn how to cook on old pans
D as Glück steht am Wege; der eine nimmt es,
und der andere geht daran vorbei.
Luck is on your path, one takes it, the other passes by it.
J edes Problem hat zwei Seiten, die falsche und die unsrige.
Original: Jedes Problemli het zwöi siiteðie fauschi ond üsi
Each problem has two sides, the wrong side and ours
This one:
W enn sich jeder um sich selbst kümmert, ist für alle gesorgt.
If everyone looks after themselves, everyone is looked after.
is especially Swiss
Mit aute Pfanne lehrt me choche = with old pans one learns to cook
Wes am Esu ds wou isch geit er ufs Isch go tanze = when the donkey feels too good, he goes dancing on ice
Di strübste Lüt hei di schönschte Ching= the most ugly people have the most beautiful children
and on the same line
Dr dümmscht Buur het di gröschte Härdöpfu = the most stupid farmer has got the biggest potatoes
I guess if I drink it on holiday it becomes Ferienlager
nützts nüt sp schads nüt = if it won't help it won't damage either
I use this often when we are trying to cure something with a natural remedy and another one I am a firm believer of
Schmiere u saube hiuft auenthaube = this means basically to add an ointment/cream/salves etc will help to ease whatever the problem is!
Then there will be Regen (rain)
When [insert your mountain of choice here] has a Hut (hat)
Then the weather will be gut (good)
I only know this proverb with the NIESEN ( mountain close to the Thunersee) I never heard it, yet, in connection with another mountain or hill
Hat der Niesen einen Hut
so wird das Wetter gut,
hat er einen Kragen
kannst heraus dich wagen
hat er hingegen einen Degen
kommts bestimmt mit Regen
"If it rains on the Rütli it will shine on the Hütli"
