Swiss radio is terrible...

How does this internet radio work ?

I remember this great radiostation (KROCK 92.3) when I was in New York for 3 months, would I be able to get that station via the internet ?

And what is this DAB ? Is it just like FM with a few local station or does it offer more ?

Yes, KROCK is it Man!

Check out http://www.krock.com/ and just press LISTEN LIVE!

If you like KROCK, then the DAB won't be much use to you. Like I said before, only a few stations are now available. The DAB radio tunes itself to all available stations when you turn it on - 8 stations in the Zurich area.

Personally, I like Rock and Alternative, GooGoo Dolls, KOL, etc, so I collect the CDs and MP3s, but in my opinion, it's easy to become intolerant to other music if you don't listen to a Pop station now and then. DRS3 is my "pop" station.

CH-iao

I don't care if it is local or national level DJs and Radio policies that are causing is all Radiowueste [radio desert]. The thing is that I sorely miss listen to the radio here in Zurich. When I lived in that place which name I don't want to remember, FM4, an Austrian channel, was there to be listened, but here.... sigh....

I am in total agreement with the Dude on this one. The worst part about Swiss radio is being fined by Billag for the crime of owning radio equipment. I pay Billag bills more often than I listen to Swiss radio.

A good place to go for Internet radio is shoutcast.com. There are literally hundreds of channels to choose from and most are commercial free. My personal favorites are their comedy channels. Listening to stand up comedians all day keeps me in good spirits.

What I absolutely don't like about Swiss radio is how over run it is with American music.

Were in Europe for heaven's sake and every European country has fantastic music on offer. Why we hardly hear anything from them is beyond me. Really. Stupid.

I audio stream at home but listen to Energy and Radio 24 in the car (much to my husbands disgust) ... I thought they were ok ... play the 'hits' and some german stuff which is often quite catchy.

Try Radio24 in Zurich - cannot beat it for dumbed-down, americanised twaddle. A lot of young people listen to same, why?

As Sada states, Europe has a treasure chest of cultural gems.

L.

Oh oui !! Like ze French chanson fooorrr example ...

Edit: just kiddin' but no, honestly, there is plenty of good stuff out there.

I also audio stream, and play podcasts in the car. Once in a while, I will scan the radio without any clue of which station I hear.

Swiss radio has changed quite a lot in the last decade. I recall stations were not as commercialized in the past. Some stations played rotating programs and offered worthwhile music from a musicology perspective, but nowadays, they all sound like American top 40 radio stations. It's advertising driven now.

Fortunately, some of the best college radio stations in the 'states are available online.

I am surprised that there are still that many people listening to FM/analogue radio. I second the recommendation of considering the rich and wide variety of available channels in the digital realm.

Excellent, there's a radio station which plays obscure 70's and 80's tunes. Definitely better than listening to Lady Gaga every 30mins.

the solution is Radio 105:

Radio 105

Switzerland's radio problem is that the financing does not allow experimenting. The franchises require local input - hence mindless über local news only of interest to the person being interviewed - and the need to pay for the franchise.

Hence 'lowest common denominator radio' where the maximum audience is sought by playing music that appeals to everyone - sadly this music does not exist.

Thank goodness to JazzFM (London) - smooth soul.

Also, here you can listed to radio round the world (quite an old site):

I don't think this was always so. I recall when Swiss radio did not have as much advertising - hardly any, actually. The commercialization must have taken place in the last 10 years or so.

Yes, sadly it is taking on an aspect of americanization. Along this trend, the next step might be segmentation of radio among demographics: by age, socio-economics, and even sub-culture.

Surely, you just mean Britain and maybe Ireland.

It would be great if some European company started offering satellite radio with regional offerings or if Sirius/XM expanded their reach into Europe and did something similar

The European provider would be particularly interesting because of the virtually unlimited range of content that could be listened to, anywhere you are

If you were not listening to the sweet COMMERCIAL FREE sounds of RUNDFUNK.FM all last month then (Selber Schuld) you will have to wait for next year. Not only did they play grooving obscure tunes, I think the announcer is actually from CANADA, and all talking was done in ENGLISH.

But due to your name I would ASSUME that you have a small knowledge of FRENCH and can reccommend COULEUR 3 radio it is SWISS and is DEFINATELY NOT terrible.

Driving OUT of Zürich you can usually pick it up on the car radio around Solothurn, otherwise you can get it on CABLE radio or listen to it online.

Couleur 3 is also on DAB, thus can theoretically be picked up over 90% of switzerland. If you have a digital radio.
