As i sit at my desk in Zug today, it is thundering outside.
This led me to wonder how many days per year have thunderstorms in Zug.... specifically, how many days per month in the summer months have a thunderstorm.
Does anyone know if weather statistics of this nature are kept here, and are available on the internet?
This is exactly the kind of information wolframalpha has promised, but pretty much failed to deliver...
If there's any info, it will be on meteoschweiz.ch but those guys have a habit of making people pay for the "good" information. If you do find anything, pls post back here as I'd be interested too.
Hi Longbyt,
I did google before asking, and I do not think it is a stupid question. As my grasp of german is less than stellar, I could not use your second, potentially useful, link in a way to find any statistics about gewittter in switzerland.
My googling sent me to meteoschweiz, i came across a phone number where you can speak to a meteorologist for chf 3 then chf 1.50 per minute. Im not sure that that is the way i wish to proceed.
hey come on, it is 'alpha'

scroll down a bit and there is a little chart with dots everytime theres a thunderstorm..
give it 12months and i'm sure that wolfram site will be much better
Sorry, point taken. It was neither polite or helpful.
Sometime when I've got a spare minute, I'll see if I can come up with something really useful on that site.
http://en.allmetsat.com/ doesn't have much on thunderstorms, but a lot of other climate statistics
I still cannot find what you are looking for, but I, too, have found a couple of interesting sites. Mostly in German, but I think you'd soon get the hang of the vocabulary if you get 'hooked'.
The foggy areas of Switzerland might be interesting for someone looking for a non-foggy place to live.
The Severe Weather in Europe Site looks quite interesting.
This Site about Storms just says what nasty things have been going on in the past.
Sorry, no details on Zug, so none of this is really what you wanted, but I've done my best.
thanks for that longbyt. i guess the statistic im looking for is quite an obscure one. i remember reading that one island, the location of which escapes me, has more than 300 storm days per year.
i will dig into your statistics and see what i can find.
North of the Alps there are about 30 storm days per year. In Ticino it's slightly more and in the Alps it's much less (Valais, Grisons) (

Atlas of Switzerland about lightnings:

violett = ca. 3 lightnings/year/km^2
red = ca. 6
yellow = ca. 20-30
It’s a wonderful day … sometimes, remote working from the balcony is definitiely a perk
