Swiss women tennis players

When we think of Swiss tennis, most of us think of Roger and Stan. The rest of the Swiss male tennis players are deep in also-ran territory. But Switzerland has three excellent women tennis players.

The first is golden oldie, Martina Hingis . She has again un-retired and is now the second ranked WTA doubles player, having won both the ladies and the mixed doubles at Wimbledon this year.

Pointing to the future there are a pair of young rising stars. I will start with Belinda Bencic , who today won the Rogers Cup , after having defeated Serena Williams yesterday. According to the BBC she will ascend to the 12th rank tomorrow, pretty close to the top ten!

The other is Timea Bacsinszky , who made the semi-finals of the French Open and the quarter-finals of Wimbledon this year, currently ranked 13th.

Let's not forget Stefanie Vögele , which by the way is our good friend and helped to donate

Hingis looked cute sitting on that V-Zug washing machine `till they dropped her after her cocaine "mishap". She sat it out well though and it seems forgotten.

She has reached the finals of both the women's and mixed doubles once again at the US Open. Article on her on the US Open web site: Hingis thrives on doubles court in second comeback .

Alas, both out in first week

Well Martina Hingis got the first title, mixed doubles (again with Leander Paes). Lost the second set, and were down 1/4 in the tie-break, then recovered to win it 10/7.

It was a good match. Now fast asleep. So knackered that cannot last to watch two Swissies beating the living (day/night)-lights out of each other

Much easier on my side of the pond ... especially with Djoko up 5-0 after 17 minutes of play

It didn't take long for Federer to reign supreme.

Final will be seed 1 vs seed 2.

(Why am I talking this mysterious sport's language anyway as everyone knows without benefit of the doubt that the standard draw usually has been Fedex vs Djoker in the final. How predictable!).

Women's doubles was a more straightforward event with Martina Hingis and Sania Mirza winning 6-3 6-3 in 1:09. Two consecutive majors in which she won both doubles titles!
