Swisscom gets rid of all SIM-locks - unlocks all iPhones on July 1!

if that isn't great news, I don't know what is!

ps: this only goes for post-paid contracts. If you have a prepaid card and bought the iPhone at full price (from Swisscom), you can get it unlocked immediately.

Are you sure it's not 1st April 2014?

:-) Not sure where the charity's coming from all of a sudden. My theory is that Swisscom probably tried to get better contracts with the European roaming partners and when they blocked, SC decided to up the pressure.

Hi,

I saw this in the Blick Am Abend and at first thought why is this news ? I use an Orange card in a phone I got through Sunrise. All non iphones have been without SIM locks for quite a while. So really it is only news if you haven't upgraded off an iphone. I suppose the companies only tell you that they are without SIM lock if you ask them.

Kinda of ironic that the iphones are the last phones to go without a SIM lock.

have fun

Martin

Thanks. This may motivate me to sell my iPhone (unlocked) sooner. Usually I would wait until I could unlock before selling or upgrading.

Dan

Me thinks maybe re-sale of iPhones will dip again, but they will still hold a good price, particularly if in good condition, particularly battery life.

I suppose this will also drop the resale value of unlocked iPhones? More supply...

Dan

Note sure - considering the fact that 3 out of 4 mobile customers are with Swisscom anyway, iPhones locked to SC have consistently fetched almost as much as unlocked ones.

Yes I'm sure that's also why Swisscom decided to allow unlocking. They already have a "lock" on most of the market anyway. They don't need locked phones to push customers to stay or join them.

Dan

Yupp, that's probably the main reason. Nevertheless, they're probably the only provider world-wide that sells the iPhone without net-lock. So far, unlocked iPhones were only sold by Apple. I don't think they're particularly happy about it. But I'm guessing Swisscom's now selling more Android phones anyway.

Oh I didn't realize that? I thought you could already buy an unlocked one, from many places, but of course at full price and without contract?

Dan

Not from a provider. Some allowed the phones to be unlocked after the purchase if paid in full. There are a handful of companies that sell grey market phones unlocked - they usually get these from Apple in Italy and re-sell them here. That's not a problem for the consumer here, though, because the warranty on the iPhone is global

Here is the official info

Thanks for the link. It's interesting that they also claim they've gotten rid of automatic contract extensions. Mine was auto extended about 6 months ago.

Dan

They got rid of that about a year and a half ago. Mine definitely wasn't extended.

Ok well maybe I'll print that out and push them on this. Last time I went to check on a new contract & phone they told me mine was extended until September of this year.

So what happens if you do nothing? Does it become month to month?

Dan

yes - once the contract's run out, you can cancel at any time (30-day notice).

I'd just give them a call and tell them they should check why your contract got extended.

There are no SIM-locks in Greece, in any of the providers.

So there is at least one more country.

I have an old Swisscom iPhone and now live in Canada. I'm currently using a Gevey Sim to be able to use the phone with a Canadian cell company.

Has anyone unlocked their phone today?

Yesterday I upgrade ios 7.0.2 in iphone 4s, which is locked by swisscom. I have prpaid card (phone was with contract which already expired) After finised, in the itunes it says the phone is unlocked. I tested with orange sim card it worked.
