Does anyone know if you pay tax on a Swisslos win? We won a few chf's on the December Swisslos scratch card, we sent in the winning ticket but got 35% less money paid into our account than the amount we won on the ticket.

You can claim the 35% Verrechnungssteuer tax back, if you live here, using your 2011 tax declaration, which must be completed by the middle of March 2012.

Note that you are not claiming back the full amount. As you are still liable for the Federal and Local Taxes on it as income, you will just be paying a lower rate than the 35% imposed at source.
Quick question please, what do you do if you do not fill in your own tax? Apparently only after a certain income bracket do you do that yourself. How do you claim it back then?
in that case, you don't / can't.
if its a small amount i would forget about it.
if its a few hundred CHF (the tax, not the winnings), I would take the trouble to file a return...
Will ask HR to help, will be worth the effort of filing a return.

As you seem to be paying the "Newbie" with-holding tax you are now paying tax at the cantonal average tax rate.
(As I understand it), if you file a tax return for 2011, and your Gemeinde tax rate is above the cantonal average, the
amount of tax you pay for 2011 will increase on all your earnings for 2011 !!
A friend of mine, on a modest secretary salary, filed a tax return and was charged an extra Fr 2'000 tax for that year.

Me... but I'm going anyway... I mean Switzerland is nice enough for the scenery, for a time, but I've failed to find much interesting about the place apart from that... and 6 months of weekends walking the Wanderwegs is quite enough thank you... it was all about work for me, and as I now have some contract work based from the UK... I can enjoy a good curry and an English pub once more... live rock music in gritty pubs, wide open spaces. etc. etc...
don't need a lottery win for that mate!
