Hi all,
I'm considering using a 4G WiFi router and a Swype Surf data-only SIM for 15 CHF/month in the house I'm moving to soon.
It is advertised as unlimited data and I do like a good deal.
Is this a dumb idea? Does unlimited mean it's actually limited? Maybe there's a limit on simultaneous TCP streams? I think I'd be using around 200-300GB/month (mostly due to the kids watching VoD).
My temporary housing has fibre and I'm getting 50Mbps over wifi while sitting next to the router (via https://testmy.net ) so I'm not impressed.
It is the first time I hear swype and sounds like a good deal.
Are you sure you have unlimited data and not throttled after 10GB?
You really ought to test over ethernet direct from the router to rule out any wifi problems you may not be aware of.
You are highly unlikely to get more than 50Mbps with 4G in real-life usage and quite possibly you'll get a lot less.
Having said all that you can cancel when you want so maybe just go for it and see what happens.
First deprioritisation at approximately 40GB. More info from
here below.
Great info, thanks!
given that I'll be living in a tiny village (Crans), I now need to figure out if we have our own cell or if we share one with something bigger (Nyon)
Since swype would use the Sunrise network, do make sure to check the
network coverage
Ok, I tested my SwissCom fiber over an ethernet cable and I got
the same result . I don't know what kind of subscription this place has, but it seems like a waste of expensive hardware.
Right, I'll go check it out with nPerf. If I can get sustained >50Mbps down and >5Mbps up that's sufficient, anything else is a bonus really. The important thing is that it shouldn't fluctuate.
