Taking a bed to the Zurich Cargo Tram

I have an old (single) bed that I need to dispose of. I think that this is small enough to go on the cargo tram (<2.5 m in all dimensions).

Is this going to work? Obviously it'd be a hassle to take something so big the whole way to the tram only to be refused.

I have heard rumors that they will lend you a cart to move big objects by hand from your place to the tram - is that true?

According to this there is a maximum size...

Das gehört ins Cargo-Tram

Einzelner Gegenstand maximal 40 kg schwer und 2,5 m lang

Flachglas

Metall

Sperrgut

Steingut

Plastikflaschen

If your bed is less than 40kg and smaller than the max 2.5 m long AND you manage to get it there without the use of a car/van or other transport (other than a cart or wheelbarrow), they should take it.

Maybe if you live near-ish to the collection point, you could go there on a reccie beforehand and ask them if they'll take it. Just to be sure.

I can pick it up so it's probably less than 40kg .. maybe I will do some cheeky disassembly

Not sure if this is of any help in your case.

But if you're getting a new bed delivered, most furniture stores that deliver items will also pick up and dispose of the old items free of charge at the same time, provided you tell them beforehand.

That's how I got rid of my old bed.

That doesn't apply here, but good to know for the future!

simply take it apart

I did mostly end up doing that, but the bed had a welded metal frame which had to be taken in one piece (not too many strange looks riding the tram with it..). In any case, the bed is gone! Woohoo!

I'm surprised it would fit in the tram!

Actually, most things didn't seem to be going into the tram itself. They had a garbage truck parked there to crush most things (including the wood from the bed) and the metal frame went into the back of a flatbed truck. The tram was just parked there looking pretty!
