Tax Returns online! Zurich

If you hadn’t noticed, in Canton Zurich anyway, you’re not going to get a tax return in the post to fill in. I received a letter with links, username and password to complete it all online.

With the letter came the flyer “Tschüss Download. Hallo Online” with a bunch of people laughing outdoors. And the message “PrivatTax download is discontinued for a simple modern paperless tax return”.

I already do my tax return online, but there are going to be many who will be totally flummoxed by this…

Oh really? I got the usual thick pack envelope but didn’t open it properly: i just peeked in and saw the blue guide book and plopped it onto my desk to panic about in 2 months time.

Does this mean I can now deduct my laptop and internet costs in order to fill out the tax return?

But you are not in Zürich?

It may also be in Zurich they are smart enough to recognise those who fill in online

Last year I just got the password so no form because I used online since it started

I’m in Canton Zurich (Züri Oberland). I completed online last year. But I have friends who always completed the paper forms who received the the same thing and are doing the headless chicken act now…

I’m in Zürich, I received the paper copies as usual

Wrong. We called them up and demanded that they send it- by Post!! And they agreed.

Of course special provisions have to be made for the computer illiterate or incompetent.

The reality is that completing online is quicker and easier than photocopying all the supporting sheets and posting them off to the scanning centre…

This and those hand filled forms will either be scanned in or the data entered manually to a computerised system - what a waste of human resources and an additional cost.

To me it sounds that it is just the downloadable version of the software which is no longer available, so if you want to use their software you have to do it online. But as others have confirmed, it does not mean that everybody must now file their taxes onine

That is not polite! How unSwiss!

Dam! So much for deducting my laptop and internet subscription.

If I understand it correctly one just fills out the 4 pages of the Tax form and then sends it back with all the necessary documents they need to work out the tax- eg bank records, dentist bills, pension and health insurance papers etc etc.Tax return: Completing it, declaring your income

And if one does it online then one fills out the 4 page tax form and uploads all the other documents they need according to the checklist of required docs?

Not sure about the waste.
Either way someone has to enter the data manually (you or them).
In the end it is the same thing. Just like self-checkout vs cashier. For some people one method is easier, for others not.

I understand personal preference. It took me time to get used to the electronic version, but now I really appreciate it. Several calculations are done for you, some data is carried over from the previous year and corrections are easy. For me it involves less work and obviously it means less work for the tax office.
The requirement for electronic communication is a fact of everyday life. If you can’t beat them, join them. I just try to do it on my terms as much as I can, which is partly why the regulation of electronic media is so important.

Maybe the title of the thread should be changed not to mislead anyone.

Starting with the 2025 tax year, the existing downloadable software Private Tax will be discontinued. Going forward, the online solution ZHprivateTax will be available.

But then we would have to change at least 50% of the thread titles on this platform.

If you have it done by a tax agent they charge an extra 30 franks for each property
