I have been living in Zurich for years but now I am considering moving to Olten. The first reason is that I found a job there. Checking the flats price/quality there is not excuse. Olten is much better. And still 30min from Zurich by train so I can always enjoy the "big" city.
I have a question regarding the taxes. I heard that living in Olten means more taxes. What that means? taxes from my salary? how much they will be?
In general, yes - Olten taxes are higher than Zürich.
How much higher will depend on your individual circumstances: taxed at source or filing, married or single, children or not, religion or not, gazillionaire or not.
Yep, every County has it's own rule and % to calculate taxes. I just know I never would wanted to live in the county of Bern. Not because of the country-side, taxes are really high there. But in Olten you have more Holidays as you will work in the county of Solothurn
..well, it's pretty much dead. I was so bored out of my mind, I started taking Arabic classes and go to Hockey Games....but if you do come here, drop me a message..there is this place that does decent wings.
Live in Zofingen...less than 10 minutes for Olten. Moving in between Zurich and Baden by March 1st. I can't wait to have a social life again! Boring here..few English speakers...last train to come home on the weekends is 1:00am from Zurich..if you miss that one, hope you have friends to stay with.
I guess each person look like for something different. I love Zuerich but I hate my flat here. And finding a good and reasonable price flat in Zurich is imposible. In Olten I can have much better appartment for less money and I have a car so I do not mind about the last train.
Now I live 5 min from HB Zurich, of course will be a bit more difficult to come to town but still possible.
Here is a little summary for people thinking of moving here. It can be a real time and money saver as things generally don't cost as much here. Everything is pretty much walking distance and therefore, you wouldn't have to commute. A real downer is the social life as there just isn't any. A big advantage is that you can easily hop on a train and be in either Bern, Zurich, Luzern, Basel within half an hour. Food wise they got a mean Indian lunch buffet, a half decent wings and burger place, McD's and 2 Michelin Star restaurants (in the vicitiny). There are also 2 -3 bars nothing major...mostly frequented by the gel hair crowd. There are also a couple of gyms and a hockey team which is not doing too bad. A real issue here is the wheather....it's worse than Zurich, there just is never any sunshine.
I wouldn't move until you are sure you like the job and the probation period is over. You might also want to check out Baden - shorter commute to Zürich than Olten and lots of expats, in case you don't want to go into Zürich all the time.
