taxes - when do I pay the difference

I submitted my tax return, it showed I owe 10k. I called the tax office and they told me "just wait till you receive our letter".

Let's say the letter arrive in a month. Will I have to pay some penalties for this 10k debt to the state? Can I prepay while I wait?

You pay when they send you the bill, NEVER before!

Tom

Personally I calculate the tax I owe and make my payments as I don't like being behind. So when I do the tax declaration if I see a gap, I fill it if I have the means to.

Prorated interests, something like 10k * 0.0025 * 1/12, for 1 month. Is it worth to bother?

When you receive the final bill, not paying it on time will incur much higher interest then 0.25%

From Jan 1st it's going to be 1% in ZH, no longer 0.25%.

If I recall it takes four of five months for the tax office to ask for the money, certainly in Vaud. So it won't be before April/May that you'll get asked for the remaining money to be paid.
