Bonjour les gars,

I'm a Swiss guy whose parents thought it was a great idea to move Australia 10 years ago. I now agree that it was, too, since my English has reached a level that has become rather native-like

I've been teaching English for 2 years near Nagoya, Japan, for a large Berlitz-like conversation school chain called AEON, and am now considering returning. I'm doing an MA in Applied Linguistics after work with UNE in Australia via distance ed. which will finish in a year. I'd be returning at around this time next year and am now looking around for what kind of employment is out there for a Swiss citizen with an Australian and a Swiss passport who has near-perfect command of Swiss-German, German and English and can communicate reasonably well in French as well as stutter unintelligibly in Japanese, has an MA in Linguistics and 2.5 years of teaching experience.

Ideally, I'd be looking for teaching work in a Kantonsschule or at any kind of higher education institutions, such as Fachhochschulen, unis or something in that direction. Anyone here in that kind of field? What are the prospects? I'm also willing to start filling in part-time/temping etc. in order to get some experience. My last job in Switzerland was working in the kuppel ( www.kuppel.ch ) in Basel behind the bar in 2004.

I'm aware of the fact that I'd need a Lehrdiplom, which I'd be prepared to do 'berufsbegleitend' as we say. Any advice welcome

oh, PS, I've already found ETAS. Are they any good?

oh, and pps: I already have a CELTA. I read here that that will be necessary as of now. However, I'd prefer doing the public school gig, or, even better, teaching teachers! Where can I get a job like that? Anyone??

They do a lot of training for teachers in CH. I guess they have one more achool like this. Will send you the link when I find it.

I would love to reactivate this thread.

Does anyone have experience with the MAS SHE (Master of Advanced Studies in Secondary and Higher Education) in Switzerland as a prerequisite for teaching at the Gymnasium/University level? It seems that the program is offered in Zurich only (ETH and Uni Zurich) and it last about 3 semesters. Is the Padagogy Masters at Uni Basel equivalent? If I get a Promotion in Pedagogy by simply writing a dissertation) could I bypass the MAS SHE?

P.S. I am married to a Swiss with a Ph.D. in a science subject from an Ivy-league US university and decent German, looking for well-paid higher-level science teaching jobs.

Your spouse will have a *much* easier time finding a job than you will;

there is a shortage of teachers in the Kantonsschulen in the natural sciences - certainly around where I live. As for Uni-level, as everywhere, it's not really possible (or only in exceptional cases) without a Ph.D. or equivalent.

Sorry about the confusion! I do have a Ph.D. in the subject I want to teach. I also have enough years of experience with research and teaching following the Ph.D. for Habilitation in the German sense, but am not 'habilitiert' (the usual prerequisite for entry professor jobs).

I actually found a part time job (at the Gymnasium level in a private school) and might start both that and the MAS SHE. As far as I understand the Basel option is not equivalent to the MAS SHE.
