Temporarily living in France while on B Permit

Hi everyone,

It's been two months since we arrived in Geneva and we still couldn't find a place to rent. Tough market I'd say.

We've been living in Airbnbs around Geneva and we were wondering if it would be an issue to stay for a month or two on the other side of the border. Just to save a few quid.

To clarify I'm a non-EU citizen with a B permit (family of an EU B Permit holder).

Thanks in advance

As non-EU, you can only spend 90 in 180 days in the rest of the Schengen area.... I’m fairly sure you don’t have the right to live there (not sure if this is different if you are an EU’s dependant).

With Covid, and possible border closures, it’s possible you could have issues coming and going daily without a cross-border permit.

Thanks! I sometimes forget that borders might be closed from one day to another during the pandemic.

You need to have a Swiss address registered with the commune in order to keep your B permit.

Some people have been known to (fraudulently) use an address where they're not actually living, like a friend's house or similar, but the risk involved if you're caught out probably overrides any savings you might make by doing so.

Thanks for the advice. I'm registered on the last Airbnb I was on, but I'll be chaging places every month until we find a place where we can stay longer or even definitively.

If I remember well, there's currently a curfew from 20h00 to 6h00 in Ain and Haute Savoie, and between 18h00 and 6h00 in Jura Français.

Also, do you have a permit to live in France?

Tom

In another thread OP says the wife is an EU citizen. I presume that means it wouldn't be hard to get a residence permit in France. BUT I don't know if non-EU dependents can be frontaliers? The wife could switch to a G permit, but are there dependent G permits?

OP - Where are you looking and what are your criteria? Post an ad in the Property Wanted section here and we can help you find something. It could be that you're looking for something too specific that rarely comes on the market, and expanding your search criteria might help you land something.

Thanks 3Wishes! We finally found an appartment in Servette
