Terminal 5 & Swiss army knives

Does anybody know if i can purchase Swiss Army Knives after "security" in Terminal 5 ?

I am transiting from Geneva via LHR terminal 5 to Asia and need to take an army knife with me as a present. My plan is to fly with cabin baggage only, but can i buy a penknife in terminal 5.....?

My alternative would be to bvuy it here and check a bag, but if this can be avopided i would prefer.

Tks for your help

(It may sound stupid question, but in Geneva you can buy army knives after security still)

I was in T5 last week and didn't see any. But then I wasn't searching for any so maybe they might have been available somewhere.

They won’t allow you to carry a knife in your carry on luggage and then you expect to buy one on the other side of security control?

I’m sure you’ll find plenty of Swiss Army knives available once you land in Asia - even if they are fakes. A few might even be genuine.

You can in Lugano.

I think they had them at Heathrow too but am not 100% certain. I seem to remember mentioning it when we were there in October.

The logical thing is to buy one here - and then put it in your check-in luggage.

Surely being able to buy knives after security and carry them onboard in any airport completely counteracts any existing security measures?

Don't they place them in a sealed bag which is then sent to the flight hold luggage?

I thought the whole point of the security measures was to keep wannabee cops in empoyment and increase turnover of airside shopping outlets.

Taking away people's knives and having them buy new fulfills both objectives. Where's the problem?

Apparently sharp objects with blades of less than 6cm can be carried.

My basic S.A. Knife has a blade of exactly 6cm, if you only count the sharpened edge and ignore the additional one cm hinge with the 'Victorinox' stamp - so already looking dubious.

Dodgyken is right.

Also, the selection of Swiss army knifes here will in any case be a lot bigger than what you might (possibly) find in Heathrow.

Not interested in fakes, as i said it is for a present so rather not give anything than a fake !

As for before/after security, after security in BA lounge you have as many sharp and long knives all over the place, plus on baord to go with the nice porcelain and glasswear, they give you 6" of Shefields' best along with what could be described as a 4 pointed trident !!!

They sell in GVA but i have to re-pass secureity in Heathrow, hence my question.

That is right. As I understand it, each airline may refuse these as well, at their own discretion

Don't really want to check luggage for a 4 day trip if possible

Why not? It can't be to save time otherwise you woudn't be transfering via LHR but flying direct!

It's for the bacon butties in the biz lounge

Why not buy it here and post it to Asia?

Um, perhaps because it’s illegal to send weapons in the post.

I can not imagine that it is illigal to send a swiss army knife by post.

I've heard about flick knives, guns, tasers, pepper spray etc but really don't see a problem with a standard swiss army knife....

I've sent Swiss army knives in the post before without any problems.

If you can buy them on Amazon and ship them anywhere then I would have thought it's ok.

Regarding carrying one purchased 'after' customs/check-in (to carry on board) I have no idea BUT if they are for sale on the other side then one has to assume that you can...where else can you go with it?
