Terrible traffic in Basel tonight, why?

My husband is driving home (well trying to) along the A2/A3 out of town towards Rheinfelden. He has gone about 2k in about 30mins, anyone a clue why it is so bad tonight?

Is it to do with the indoor tennis thing?

Clocks went back. It's darker than usual. Drivers are easily confused. Central Basel was also crowded with people seeminly grinding to a halt at every junction not knowing what to do.

As a cyclist I had to weave in and out of traffic much more than usual to get home at my usual pace. I love it. It's too boring cycling here sometimes ;)

Also the holiday in DE might have something to do with it. It was crazy in Konstanz today and I was thinking WTF until I stopped and asked someone if it was a holiday or something and, voila, I had completely forgotten the German observation of All Hallows.

Also, I think a huge chunk of the 7 billion folks on the planet relocated to central europe, at least that's what it feels like lately....and each of them come with 1.5 cars.

It seemed like a lot of families were going downtown for Herbstmesse tonight too. I was trying to leave my parking garage at around 5:00ish and I couldn't even get up the stairs for all the British expat families who treated the Treppehaus like it was one-way.

Thanks all, I think the combination of clocks back, Halloween, holidays and Federer playing at St Jakobshalle must have caused it.

I really hope it was a one off otherwise our little girl won't be seeing much of her daddy over the next few years....

Very bad this lunch time, so probably equally bad tonight.

Roads are full of lost and confused foreigners. By "foreigners" I mean people on German, French and non-Basel Stadt plates. Loads from Lugano for some reason.

My guess is that contrary to what everyone will say if you ask them, they've all got the day off, are desperate to go shopping, and will drive across the county from one corner to another just to get to Manor.

I heard the same thing, it's a Public Holiday here in Aargau (plus other Catholic Kantons) and apparently they are all in Basel today.

I have told my husband to go an alternative route this evening, last night it took him 2 hours to get home (a 20km journey).

I experienced some heavy traffic going home today for lunch as well. It was worse than my typical evening commute. I noticed plates from TI and VS among the lot and a lot of cars that didn't seem to pick the right lane to make their turns.

Terrible commute coming home tonight. Not sure what the main delay was (I assume an accident) but I passed at least three accidents where the near-stationary had run into the back of one another. I finally bailed out and cut across the city, which in the end seemed much quicker than waiting in the traffic.

It took me 1:25 to get home instead of the normal 10 minutes. It's amazing the knock-on effect a single accident can have on traffic.

accident after the Schweizerhalle tunnel; it was on the traffic radio.

traffic on the freeway was backed up so much at around 18:00 I didn't even bother with it and took surface streets. Took me 20 minutes as opposed to my normal 10 but probably faired better that way. The worst part was that I had to wait 5 cycles for one red light, where I usually only have to wait 1.
