Tesla parking sensors

Back to the topic. I washed my car last Saturday. I forgot to dry one camera under the rear view mirror that contributes to generate the top view of the car. Of course, the resulting image was completely distorted when I was driving on reverse to leave the carwash.

I just questioned myself, how the f*** can you estimate a distance from an image distorted by a water drop on camera lens? There’s a thing called rain, quite common in CH, not sure about the “real world” performance of distance measurement based only on cameras

PS. an acquaintance installed a camera/sensor system like this in a very old camping van. Retail price is 60 CHF, quite sure auto manufacturer can get a much better deal buying by thousands. Looks like I really need to take driving lessons again, when I get the car :wink:

I currently have no sensors either - but a much smaller, shorter car with much better view out of all windows, not just the the arrow-slit that is the back window of the Model Y…

There are 2 parts to consider: the detector and the notification.

detection can be using ultrasound, camera, push button

the notification can be camera, beep in the car, vibration, neuralink.

the 2 elements can be independent. just because you have no ultrasonic detector, doesn't mean you can't have a beep in the car.

And there are those who cannot afford to keep up, but attempt to turn their shortcoming into virtue signaling to impress instead...

ICE is only cheaper because no one sells oil at the true cost (that would be the cost to re-create the oil - as you can see from stuff like e-fuels, the price would be astronomical).

Also, there hasn't been much innovation happening (in ICE space) for quite some time - the physical limits (of efficiency) have mostly been reached and it's mostly been cosmetics (or ramping up HP/torque). As such, and with economics of scale, ICEs can be produced rather cheap.

But the economics of scale run both ways: up and down. As less and less ICE cars are produced, negative scale effects will bring down ICE faster than politicians and car-company executives would have ever dreamed (or feared).

Longevity (beyond the 8 year mark) is a problem, IMO, but maybe not so much because of battery power but failure in other parts (wear and tear due to the huge weight).

except the 2g network it relies on doesn't exist anymore, so it's just a brick nowadays.

They just need some little wipers to clear away any water from the camera view. I'm sure that won't be expensive to develop and provide lots of additional costs

hahahaha I remember this was one of the most ridicule displays of "engineering prowess"...but maybe it's having a comeback as wipers for cameras used to measure distances
