Tesla parking sensors

Hello together,

What do you think about the omission of the parking sensors in the new Teslas?

I ordered a Model Y for my wife and apparently it will be delivered in November without parking sensors.

Not really that convinced that this will work with just the cameras. What do you guys think?

In the German motor-talk forum, somebody posted that the cameras can indeed see quite a lot and it might not turn out to be that bad.

The problem is IMO the lack of a front-camera anyway.

Probably needs some practice though. People had been parking huge vehicles for decades before any sort of sensors, so it should not be an impossible task.

On one hand, unacceptable in a 60+K car.

On the other hand, installing 3rd party parking sensors is possible. Kits are sold for a few francs.

Du hast natürlich recht, dass es früher auch ohne Parksensoren ging. Die Frage ist halt, ob meine Frau das parkieren auch ohne Parksensoren hinbekommt, da sie sich an diese gewöhnt hat.

Aus meiner Sicht fehlt hier, wie du sagst, die Fronkamera. Es wäre sehr sinnvoll, wenn diese vorne am Frunk wäre. Man hätte hier einen Workaround machen sollen, seitens Tesla.

Bin echt gespannt wie meine Frau das meistern will.

You are of course right that it used to work without parking sensors. The question is whether my wife will be able to park without parking sensors, since she has become accustomed to them.

From my point of view, as you say, the front camera is missing. It would make a lot of sense if this was at the front of the frunk. Tesla should have made a workaround here.

I'm really curious how my wife wants to master this.

is the idea that they will anyway still have the beep but that the car will generate them based on camera images instead of the sonic sensor. in which case, it will be transparent to the driver.

Actually, it seems that there will be no acoustic sound at all. Only through the cameras on the side and also to the rear you can see the distance. To the front, only through the windshield.

That will be really exciting.

Maybe there will be more work for car body stores. :-)

I can rarely get self-parking to work even with sensors!

Tesla has cut out other stuff too:

Homelink (automatic garage door controller)

Front seat adjustable lumbar support

These omissions must add some 100s to their net profit. Which I am all for though. Poor legacy manufacturers are fighting to even make EVs, let alone make money out of them.

VW, who owe banks a staggering $200 billion, have recalled every iD model made before January this year to repace the 12v battery and update the software. This takes 3 to 5 days(!) and a free car is supplied by VW. Their much-heralded version 3.0 software released in January has yet to be available over the air - or over anything else...

My ICE VW is still working honky-dory. All sensors are go. Self parking piece of cake.

I am not sure if this is the latest version or if it will be the new version. All Tesla 2023 models are supposed to have Vision Only. We are curious.

@kerqovari: I wish your wife good luck with parking ;-)

Mine even has physical and sonic feedback, though just occasionally.

My car will stop on its own, if it feels it's getting too close to an object, you can push it of course, but in normal parking it just stops (like a dog on a lead.. really have to force it to move)

Result is that in over 2 years my OH has not dinged the car once... (as opposed to the last car where I ended up replacing the whole plastic back bumper out of shame.)

I see Tesla wants to achieve same parking support with just cameras, I guess the proof will be in the pudding? (or the wall )

I think having audio too would be useful for blind drivers.

Well if you do only calls and sms then old style dumb nokia is by far the best phone on the market, running 2 weeks on 1 charge easily, unbreakable, dirt cheap. You can't polish your ego with it in front of people you don't care about anyway, but that's about it.

On the other hand last time I checked cars are mysteriously still used mainly for driving from A to B, where ICE rules for TCO or doing things like 1500km drive in 1 day. Ie buying used Toyota Corolla for 5k chuffs, running another solid 100k km in 8 years on it, paying just oil, tires and brakes - story of my wife before we met, smart woman that is. Or to put it in modern perspective, budget for one door handle replacement out of warranty on Tesla.

But I always personally thank all tesla buyers for co-financing advancement in automobile industry and being beta-testers for Elon, so rest of humanity can profit from it in decades to come. So thank you for your hard work and cash!
