The Android beasts thread, 2015 edition

That phone is such a missed opportunity. I got to try it out in Japan and the effect is admittedly cool, but everything else about it is pretty mediocre. The OS and performance is crap and you can't ignore workarounds like the extra bezel at the bottom, with the front camera there and everything. People don't want selfies mostly of their chin.

Am I right in saying that the S5 was waterproof and the S6 isn't?

Correct, but who needs that eh? Anyway I'm sure there will be an S6 Active for the outdoorsy types.

Or people who browse on the bog?

I've never needed my phone to be waterproof but I'm not a fan of features being removed from phones. Not even Apple are that bad!

I'm looking at taking advantage of relatively cheap electronics in Switzerland before I move back home. I'm also fairly destructive with phones and would like a fairly rugged/water-resistant(+scratch-proof screen?) phone. I've narrowed it down to the following:

- Sony Experia Z3

- Samsung S4/5/6 Active.

I'm new to smart phones, and would just like to be able to email/text/phone/look up directions, no other requirements. Any advice on/experience with these options?

Its a fair point, and I guess if you want a non plastic phone that is waterproofed and memory expandable then only the Xperia Z3/4 have those bases covered.

One phone shown at MWC I haven't heard people mention is this monster, the Saygus V2. The specs are absolutely nuts.

I use a Samsung S4 for this and it works for me and I am no rocket scientist with phones.

I see Interdiscout has white Samsung S5 out for Chf349. That is a good price. http://www.interdiscount.ch/idshop/p...te-/detail.jsf

Sunrise also has it out for Chf397 although I am not sure what the advantage (if any) is buying it from Sunrise? anyone? I need a new phone plan so this is an option.

I use my phone for tething to a laptop, will a S5 be any faster than a S4 for this purpose?

Yup. I think the Xperia z4 will be my next shot at a phone. Quite happy with the OPO just now...except their painfully slow updates.

Do you know if it's using Qualcomm 64bit SOC?

The specs are truly amazing

As far as I know, it's Snapdragon 801 which is 32-bit.

The Saygus certainly has some nice specs, but it looks to me like a prototype from an enthusiastic startup (certainly no bad thing). The demo at MWC, by all reports, was a bit flaky.

It'll be clearer once something closer to the retail model is in the hands of reviewers.

What exactly is the failure mode here? Surely the position of the human body while producing ordure in the sitting position precludes a direct path downwards into the water.

I see the biggest problem being getting fag ash on the screen. (Yes, I take a sh*t just like my grandad, except I've swapped the Sporting Life for something heavier...)

Turning around with phone in hand to flush

Putting up or down the toilet seat with phone in hand

Ok. I usually put the phone (actually a tablet) on the side of the bath in this case, but that is maybe not possible in every situation.

I think with this risk (particularly that very nasty pre-flush drop), what you're looking for is a machine-washable phone...

The S4 has a removable back plate that you pry out with your fingernails. I bought S4 replacement batteries for like €20 for a 3-pack. Between them and a travel power pack I can go 3 days without charging.

How do you rip off sheets of toilet paper with only one hand?

Can we please get back to talking about the technology

A quick, sideways tug, obviously. Don't say you've never done it!

Like I said, I've never needed my phone to be waterproof but shit happens.

maybe a phone with a bum-wiping feature? :P
