The case for re-introducing KFC to Switzerland

It seems to me that KFC (or a cheeky rip off) could enjoy modest sales in someplace like Zurich or Basel. I believe the expat community and curious Swiss teenagers alone should be sufficient to keep the business ticking over, so the question is why did KFC fail the first time around?

Too many Guggeli-Tag signed vans around, with a chiken on top looking at the sky praying not to be eaten

i guess 20 people going for kfc twice a month isn't enough to cover the overheads

Did they fail? I wasn't even aware that they tried.

i get the feeling that there is more to this, KFC Pizza Hut and Pepsi are all owned by the pepsico corporation and you dont really see any of these products in Switzerland. I am thinking there must be a political dimention to this.

what do the rest of you think?

It was before my time, but according to some of the older members there used to be a KFC somewhere in CH.

The Swiss government wouldn't let them rear the six-legged chickens they use in the rest of the world, nor would they let them import them.

The costs of using standard Swiss two-legged chickens became prohibitive, and they were forced to withdraw.

I want less fast food, not more...

Who needs KFC when you have outback chicken wings and wedges

KFC is so over rated, soggy chicken and soggier chips

You know...I kind of rationally know why......but there is still something odd about Coop selling packs of 5 chicken wings......

Fixed that for you.

I'd like more smoothie and salad places, healthier options to eat on the run at lunch, that sort of thing. I was thinking how well a "Salads, Soups and Smoothies" place would do near the university, most of the female students seem to be on a diet of some kind. You could serve the stuff in lab equipment and have the health benefits of the various ingredients listed on the menu, like a "prescription snack".

Sorry, I digress...

This isn't about Kittster Fried Chicken. You are welcome to go and eat a fitnessteller while chainsmoking like all the other Swiss I see.

Caloriewise, Outback really ain't better than KFC. I'll agree with you on the chips, worst in the business.

I don't get it either. Fine, KFC is unhealthy fast food crap. But McDonalds is worse and they do a roaring trade on Niederdorf! I think it might be a branding thing.

There used to be a Pizza Hut right opposite Zürich HB in the place where Dataquest now is. They were really popular as well and you sometimes got people queuing outside. And there wasn't even anything special about it either - a bit like comparing Hooters in Zürich to Hooters in the US (ie, nothing to do with the original). But business seemed good, but suddenly they closed down and left. I reckon on the whole chains have a tough tune in Zürich. The number of Sams Pizza franchises has dwindled over the years as has Spaghetti Factory. Only Starbucks and MacDonalds seem to be doing well.

Oi, I don't smoke, never have, never will. And I'm not even allowed the Fitnessteller at the moment... Cranky, moi? Never!

The point is, there are also chains that cater to healthier eating habits, we have so much junk available already and seeing what impact the broad availability of cheap fast food has had in a place like Malaysia, where 20 years ago there were hardly any overweight people and now they're all at A&W's, barely fitting on the seats...

Insane! Pizza hut is the Velveeta of fast food... KFC is like....the Cathedral City.

Fast cheap food (a la McD or KFC) needs cheap raw materials and cheap labour....and there ain't much of either of that here....and per capita consumption isn't very high either vs US, UK etc etc etc.....just isn't great business for them

Nicky, you know that I love you and the Outback wings to bits but you seriously cannot compare them to this...

or this..

or this....

4 more days to go before I sink my teeth into one of them...4.more.days.....

So are you interested in becoming a co-franchisee? I think we could really make this work.

Sure, but the inhabitants of a great city like Zurich deserve the choice. I don't think people would eat more fast food, they'd just have another option than kebab or McD's on the Niederdorf on a Saturday night. But yeah, a proper sandwich place wouldn't go amiss either.

Unfortunately I'm absent the 2M or so Chfs I'd imagine setting up the franchise on Niederdorf or similar would cost.
