The Cows Coming Down....

Hi....I'm wondering if anyone knows dates as to when I can visit a village that will be celebrating the cows coming down for the winter?

In particular, next weekend Sept 26 & 27, as I have visitors coming .

Does it normally happen on a Saturday?

Thanks!

Try this for some events (including a few cows)

I gather that the larger, organised, events are on Saturdays or, occasionally, Sundays. The smaller villages bring the cows down on weekdays as well. They have a different day for each village. These are smaller events but still with similar ceremony.

When I was going up to Engstligenalp from Adelboden a few weeks ago, we happenened across this procession.

Thanks very much! Much help!!

If you have a car, and don't mind travelling to a beautiful area, my recommendation is Charmey, and it's on next weeekend.

Deep in the heart of real cheese country too.

Here is an updated list: My Switzerland

Did anyone go to Weggis on Saturday the 25th to see the cows coming down from the alps? I'm just wondering if it went off in the pouring rain or if it has been postponed? Anyone have any info on upcoming "cow events" that aren't too far from Zug?

The german words are alpabzug or alpabfahrt. I looked for sunday, if there was any nearby, but only saw links to saturday. Not mentioned anywhere if it was postponed/cancelled/drowned in rain.

Doc.

The link that I posted last year updates automatically and had this years events listed

Yes we went...it happened...was more like a cattle market in central Weggis and then they did a procession with the flowers back to their barns, was interesting but would have been a fab day if not for the torrential downpour

It was lovely, very...... erm....moving. But our village has got sh@t everywhere (on the pavements as well). How long before they clean it up? .

We're going to one in Kerns this Saturday. Apparently there will be alphorns, which I love and don't get to see very often.

Do you have more info for this even in Kerns?

Just got back from the event in Elm... Beautiful. It was nice to get out of Zurich and see some more of Switzerland. And those cowbells they use are huge!

Sorry! I didn't see your reply till after the event. It was good though. Fairs are great for cheap(er) food.

Again the farmers are bringing the cows and cheeses down from the Alps, in the villages there are celebrations, and maybe a market.

This Saturday, tomorrow morning , on 26 September 2015,

Charmey, http://www.la-gruyere.ch/en/alpabzug-charmey.html

If you are driving there, be prepared to pay to park on the edge of the villages, sometimes there are shuttle buses provided.

Also expect to get your shoes dirty, change into boots or old shoes when there, and take boxes or bags to bring the dirty shoes home again!

Tomorrow is Etivaz, also.
