The sport of staring.....

It has been brought up here in the past how the Swiss do tend to stare a bit more than what most Anglo types are used to.

I bumped into an article today, a handy guide on how to stop staring .

Next time someone stares at you, regardless of where you are, you can have a copy of this article with you and hand it to them as you leave their staring space.

Well, just a thought at least.

Could I interest you in a t-shirt...?

People don't stare at me, as when they do they are instantly blinded by my awesomeness.

A friend of mine once let out (and quite loudly I might add) with "Stop staring at me you creepy f**k!". That directed all the attention where it needed to go.

When staring, if you must, always wear sunglasses and face another direction. This will protect the feelings of your prey and you will avoid a lawsuit.

My favorite saying to such a person is......"why don't you take a picture? It'll last longer". Or just the body language mechanic of taking a photo will do just fine!

Tja....it's a part of the culture!

i tend to stare back right into their eyes waiting to see how long it takes before they stop staring. older creepy men are the best....they can stare quite a long time!

i have now taken up 'staring' as a sport on the trams just so i can feel like i 'fit in'

I just smile at the starer disconcertingly. Affectionately. Tenderly.

Creepily.

Strangely enough, they back off sooner rather than later

Actually some of the staring habits are actually quite amusing. Such as at a restaurant - if somebody breaks a glass. I prefer to watch the other people break their necks to see what happened - how long they stare at it (perhaps even discuss it) - more than the breaking of the glass itself. Does that make sense? :-)

I stare right back, and smile ..... they soon look away...

Personally, I love to stare - through the viewfinder of my camera

So does this mean, they should all go see a doctor then?

That's my tack, too. I haven't yet plucked up courage to pout my lips and do a little air-kiss at them yet but I'd love to do it just to see the reaction, especially if it's a chap out with his missus.

Actually I dont consider it staring when im looking through my viewfinder... they cant see me ...

Exactly... Unless, of course, the monster Tele is mounted

There are some other basic rules for sunglass staring too.

For instance, if you are staring directly at the "prey", and they turn to look at you, don't move... its the worst thing you can do. They will immediately sense you, and become more guarded. Just pretend to be looking intently at something in the middle distance, or you can intentionally move, and then watch them scarper like meerkats.

But I have noticed the whole staring thing on the Metro. and it's not just the older folks. Unil and EPFL students are at it too. Luckily, I've pretty much mastered an entirely neutral, blank stare which seems to do the trick nicely. But then there are some mornings when I'm simply not in the mood for it. On those occasions, theres a much higher chance that I'll loose it, and unleash the fury of a slightly cocked eyebrow...

Theres also the days when I'm not all there, but they seem to realise that and studiously avoid eye contact...

I guess it's a fine line between not staring and not looking where one's going...

.

I have become more Swiss and tend to stare quite a lot ( selectively stating IYKWIM )

A very well known company has a seven second rule. If you stare for

more than seven seconds it can be held against you as sexual abuse.

The company is Intel, this company policy is international - not just US.

hear, hear, must be all very amusing !!!
