Thermal spa and pregnancy

We will be in the area of Lake Constance this weekend and with the rainy forecast I was thinking to visit one of the many thermal spa's. However I am 8 months pregnant and was wondering if anyone has heard if this is not recommended. My doctor is currently on vacation and I have a number to call with questions, but I have to pay... so I thought I'd ask here first.

The thermal spa websites say the water runs at 34C (93 degree F) so it doesn't seem too hot to cause any problems. Has anyone visited a thermal spa late in their pregnancy, or been told to avoid them?

I did pregnancy water exercises in 34deg thermal water here, but it was only schedulled up to 7thmo (it had less chlorine to not irritate the skin/eyes). I also know they do not recommend back home warm public baths in advanced pregnancy since it is harder to keep the water clean if the temp is higher, all sorts of things can grow in it if they do not keep the chorine level high. But, nobody can really tell, you would have to ask that specific spa resort. Chances are it will all be fine, the risk is up to you. I would still go since that floating, weightless feeling is precious, but I would opt for cooler pool if you can.

It's not recommended. Had terrible back pains at 7.5 mnts, I thought a Thermal bath, would help, Doctor said no.

If in doubt - No.

As far as I know, it is not recommended. There are people who do it anyway and do not have problems, but I would not risk it.

High temperatures influence the blood circulation and -pressure, which might be irregular during pregnancy. However with 34 degrees its not so much the temperature of the water, but the hygiene that can be a problem (high risk of fungal infections etc), as well as the minerals. For example some thermal baths in Switzerland contain sulphur which is not good.

My doc also warned against warm water at any time during my pregnancy.

To the OP, I wouldn't chance it.

nO, it can provoque an early delivery. Not in all cases, not for every woman but it can.

When I was not getting contractions in both pregnancies they put me in the delivery tub with warm/hot water to provoqur them, it did work.

I've read that it's fine to be in warm water while pregnant as long as it's not higher than the normal body temperature (98.6 F or 37 C).

But I agree that the risk of infection may be something to worry about, since I don't think most thermal bads have chlorine, etc. to kill bacteria (like pools do)... not to mention the sulfur.

But *sigh*... I'm in my 3rd trimester, and a trip to the thermal bad does sound sooo nice right now!

Eat some weird food and be ratty to all menfolk, normal behavior basically.....

Thanks for the replies. I will look for something else to do this rainy weekend.

I went while pregnant - my doctor said no more than 20 mins though.

It's not recommended because the warm water and the warm air can cause circulation problems. The Minerals are no problem. For more information see here: swissmom (german)

wishing you all the best for the birth!

Just to let you know that I'm 31 weeks pregnant and have been going to my local spa (water temp 34C) 4-5 times a week for the whole pregnancy. Both my hausarzt and OBGYN know this and are happy with it, they just said to get out if I feel too hot or uncomfortable. Also, I know all the staff there and they are aware of my pregnancy (small village-everyone knows everything!) and they have never warned me against it. I love going as I'm having sciatic nerve problems and so am not so mobile outside the water!

Whatever you decide, have a lovely weekend!

So are you not supposed to have a hot bath either? I couldn't have survived without hot baths when i was pregnant
