thinking of buying my own Concept2 Rowing machine... good/bad idea?

Hi guys,

I'm thinking about purchasing a used C2 rowing machine. It's the newest model and quite a good deal from my knowledge of its going prices back in America. (1050fr).

I'm thinking about the future when I have to sell and leave the country. I recall in America, rowing machines were very popular, especially the Concept2 brand. How's the demand in Switzerland? Do you think it's a good or a bad idea to buy my own, or should I just get a gym membership?

Thanks guys.

They are certainly the most common type of rowing machine here too. Keep an eye on Ricardo.ch to see how much second hand ones sell for:

Also be aware of the noise that they make - it's not so noticeable in a gym but a C2 is not something your neighbours are going to thank you for if you don't have a very well sound-insulated apartment (or a basement).

Thanks for the reply, but I just decided not to buy it. It'll suck not to be able to exercise whenever I want, but I think I'll just stick with jogging and biking...

I'm thinking of getting one myself, but I live in an apartment and I wonder if the machine wouldn't be to noisy... Anybody using a Concept2 indoor rowing machine in an apartment?

I would say it would almost certainly be too noisy to use in an apartment, unless exceptionally well insulated or you have a basement you can use it in... The alternative would be a WaterRower , which are significantly quieter.

I guess that getting a Concept2 would not be a good idea in my case, then. Cheers.

Many thanks also for the WaterRower suggestion. I will look into that.

I have a WaterRower. Really quiet. Nice machine and looks almost like a piece of high end furniture.

The Concept2 is a great rowing machine. No way is it too noisy, although noise wouldn't be one of my criteria when considering a purchase.

We use the Concept2 at Crossfit all the time. Great machine, well built and good value for what you're getting.

Consider purchasing through this link:

No arguments that it is a great rowing machine. Other than a RowPerfect (which is somewhat different in philosophy) I wouldn't use anything else. FYI I rowed for 18 years...

However the latest query was about using one at home in an apartment, and I would say you're going to have some pretty annoyed neighbours if you are training on a C2 at home regularly. Just to get an idea have a look at this video (NB this is a C2 on slides, but the noise is the same):

I just sold my concept 2 recently. Unfortunately, I don't think I had my technique completely perfect, and it's use exaggerated an assymetry in my anatomy that caused me great discomfort on any row longer than 20min.

Having said that, I found it a great machine and I regret parting with it.
