Timing of Move out and Move in to new apartment??

We have a new apartment in Zurich from the 1st of April.

Since we just found out about the new place we missed the deadline to give the 3 months notice to our current landlord, but would like to move out end of March.

I was wondering how people have timed the move out/move in process when you have to be out of an apartment and in the new one on the same day.

Is it possible to have movers come, do the professional cleaning, and the handover all on the same day?

We're hoping to be able to get the keys to the new place a few days before the end of March since the current tennants will be leaving mid-March, but if this doesn't work out I was just curious to see how other people have handled similar situations.

Thanks!!

I dont know anyone who has done it all in one day but rather over the space of a couple days.

last itme we moved i took some time off and it still took us a couple days before we were able to hand the keys back.

I know you can hire professionals to come and move everything etc but I dont know a name sorry `

A forum search might help on that one

Even if you use professional movers & cleaners rather than DIY, you can expect it to take at least one day for the moving and another day for the cleaning.

Hi,

In how many days were you able to handle move out and cleaning? Did your landlord let you move in a few days earlier than written on the contract?

In our case the previous tenant moved out and paid one month overlapping rent, but were out of the apartment before the end of that month, so we could move in without having to pay double rent.

We did not have to pay double rent as we were moving out of an apartment that was being demolished, and the landlord was very flexible...so we just timed everything to suit our needs.

Paying double rent for one month is hard to avoid... But the previous tenant would be wise to move out and do the handover a week to two before the end of the month, as if they leave it to the last minute and somoething goes wrong, they could then have to pay for the extra rent or work to fix the problem.

I was about to start a thread asking more or less the same question as the OP, but as I found this I thought of posting it here..

We have been given an apartment to start from 1st of October. Our current rent agreement says that we can only move on 31st March or 30th September and we need 3 months notice. Which means, technically the next date we can move is on 31st March 2015...

If nevertheless we want to leave by 30th September, we should look for a new tenant.

As I see here from some comments, paying double rent is kind of the norm to go through the handover.. However, I wonder if there is a way to make the move by 1st October while having the new tenant also move on 1st October..

I was thinking of a kind of transporting cum storage agency, which would take your furniture and store it for a couple of days and then deliver to the new apartment.. Does someone know whether something like this exists??

I do not know about such a service. My gut feeling is that even if it existed, the cost and hassle would make paying a month - or 2 weeks - double rent the more attractive option.

Hi

Slight Hijack but on theme - I was going to ask is it possible to move out over the winter months Dec or Jan or is that an urban myth as this point?

I think you can move out almost anytime, as long as you give sufficient notice, and find a new tenant. That's normally how it works. As for moving/cleaning, we had a 4.5 room apartment and a company moved us and cleaned, in the same day. The handover was done the following day, however.
