I just wanted to give people some advice about this particular new branch of Toni & Guy.
It's always difficult to find a good hairdresser and one you trust, especially when you move countries and don't speak the language. But after using Toni and Guy salons all over the world, I found that 99% of the time the hairdressers are skileld and have a good knowledge of trends and also listening to what actually want rather than what they think you should have.
Anyway, I had been to the other Toni & Guy in Zurich which was ok but not amazing, and then I saw the groupon offer for the other so I thought I'd give it a try. I got my hair cut by a British guy, so I thought it would be ok, but he made an absolute mess of my hair and gave me a Lloyd Christmas (Dumb and Dumber) which is completely not what I asked for.
I didn't see the full extent of how bad it was until I got home and a friend commented on it. The fact that the British hairdresser was supposed to be quite senior and traveled between various salons made it all the more worse.
I booked in again a month later but specifically asked not for the same guy (I know.. I should have learned my mistake and not gone back! But I specifically asked not to have the same guy cut it). Again, I wasn't happy with the cut and realised that the guy who cut my hair was due to go to London for training the following week after cutting my hair He told me this as he was cutting my hair... nice to know! Haha!
I called them the next day to say I wasn't happy, but I was traveling for a week after the cut, so they offered me to go in to see what they could do when I returned. This time a 'senior stylist' cut my hair but again I was not happy.
I don't want to complain too much but I learnt my lesson now to not go there or just trust a salon because of an international reputation. Especially at the prices they are charging!!!
Point of the story. 3 bad cuts, lots of money spent. Don't go to Toni and Guy in the city centre!!
I'm also not too impressed with them, especially not for the price one pays. They used to be quite busy (but still no reason to let your customers wait for over 30 minutes), but these days seem to be over.
There's also a Swiss guy there who is supposed to be Swiss hairdresser of the year, but I have yet to find out why.
That, in and of itself, doesn't tell you anything. High-end salons routinely send their staff for continuing education to learn new techniques, styles, and products. So him saying that he's going for training in no way indicates that he was untrained. (Sounds more like simply untalented.)
I have been to this Toni and Guy several times, and had a cut from 3 different people, including the British guy you mention. I was happy with the cut, but my hair is fairly simple to do.
The best one was a new German girl who s there as a temp, I think her name is Anita or something. She did the best one.
I had a great haircut at this branch. I will definitely be returning. The staff were all very polite and helpful, it was a very relaxing atmosphere and Pablo was great. He is very knowledgable and a great stylist.
Had my hair cut and highlighted at Toni & Guy Kappelergasse and was very pleased. Everybody there was friendly and understood exactly how I wanted my hair done.
oh, yeah. The british guy is AWESOME (sarcasm). My friend and I have very different hair: I have curly thick black hair, she has very silky straight fine red hair.
I was 8 months pregnant, she wasn't. We went in separately, spread out over three weeks, both of us asked for simple trims.
Both of us walked out with Farah Fawcett hair. >still growing out<
I've heard little other than horror stories from Toni & Guy, and my own (single) experience consisted of a visit to the Canary Wharf branch in London. After, I returned to my desk. My boss, generally a rather laconic Brit, looked at me, smiled, then burst out laughing. "Mate, sorry, but you look preposterous." There was nothing to do but laugh - he was absolutely right.
