Too Slow for Swiss Land

Don't tell me - you see hundreds of crashes in your mirrors

One of ours does, with the (original Audi dealer option) summer wheels/tyres on, which are somewhat larger than the standard-sized winter ones. The latter give a 7% over-reading, which seems to be what is built-in to VAG cars.

@DK, i couldnt resist giving you that 100th groan

Savannah? Chicago? Florida? Which forum do you think you're on?

We were discussing the driving in Switzerland... and your post truly indicates your ability to adapt to European/Swiss driving/roads...

Unless there is a 3rd party to back up the claim the police are not interested. They were not interested in a hit and run that was on film..

Obviously you don't often have to drive the Forch Autobahn! This marvelous piece of Swiss road building is a one-lane highway for the first 15kms out of Zurich. So there is zero chance of passing and yet drivers will actually form a 10 car 'train' of tailgaters all doing 105kph in the 100 limit.

Every so often this all ends in tears...

I don't understand when people say "the tailgater made me do xyz etc ". So what if they are 1cm behind, keep at your speed or slow down a bit, maybe they get the idea and blow them a kiss when they pass Instead of the finger.

I get a few people behind that flash lights wanting to pass on single roads when I'm at or above the limit, or if im overtaking on the highway..... that's their problem, not mine.

I did say there would be exceptions.

Except for those bloody mobile ones.. or cops hiding behind bushes - which i have seen a few times this year. The last time, I was wondering why the guy in front was going so slow until i realised 20 metres before, that there was a cop holding a speed gun, peering out from behind a wall. Thanks to that guy I didnt get a ticket, whilst they had 3 cars they were fining at the same time

In any case, tail gating is hardly a swiss phenomenon. I know the OP is from the UK - I've been tailgated in the UK. Being a tourist, the last thing you want is a speeding fine, so youre over cautious and inevitably you piss off the people behind you.

No, my post truly indicates my LACK of ever driving in Europe (I've never needed to).

Have been driven or else use public transport for everywhere I've gone since moving here - the exception being parking the car for a less-experienced friend on occasion.

Even so, safe driving is safe driving is safe driving. I've never gotten a speeding ticket - have you? I've never hit anyone else in an accident, not even a little bump to the fender in heavy traffic - have you?

you could argue driving 30kph on a nice big motorway is driving safely, of course the people swerving all over the place to miss you are all nutters

Except 60kph is the legal minimum on Swiss motorways.

Drivers in Italy and Switzerland are very dangerous, and make it impossible to feel safe when on the roads. I constantly have others drivers on my tail, flashing me to go faster or get out of the way. IGNORE ALL THESE DRIVERS and continue to drive in the correct, road-worthy, safe way.

If it is "constantly" maybe you should consider taking a serious look at your driving

ignoring other road users is certainly NOT a safe way to drive!! if lots of people are flashing you and tailgating you then ask yourself, who is the problem here???

Probably the car behind in excess of the speed limit.

If I had constantly other drivers tailgating me, I'd probably start questioning my own driving...

In most cases it's not that hard to get rid of tailgaters. Depending on the circumstances either speed up a little, move over to the right lane or use the next turnout (or traffic permitting, a straight stretch of road) to let them pass.

A friend of mine just got back from the UK. He said the same thing about UK drivers.

And he's a Brit!

Tom

I suppose that depends - if I am driving within the posted limits (both minimum and maximum), the problem is most certainly NOT me.

Not possible when on a single carriageway or urban road. I do not need to question my driving, I follow the speed limit and do not break the law by speeding!
