Too Slow for Swiss Land

I agree with Peg A and Sarah123, drivers here are a joke. no one drives at the speed limit - they seem to take this as a 'minimum' speed - not maximum. I have bad experiences all the time whilst here. I look forward to going back to the UK!

Mr Angry...wind your neck in dear.

I drive at 100 KPH if the speedo says 100 KPH then I stick to it.

Maybe the speedo is 10% out or 5% out ....

If the driver behind does not like it, then please feel free to report me to the police for doing 10% or 5% under the limit.

I'm trying to get through 3 years without a speeding ticket.

Do GPS here warn of speed cameras ? I read they are not allowed to.

In the UK in the press recently , they were reporting on how the police were going to clamp down on tail gating. I did wonder how they would catch such drivers , other than being on road at time and spotting such an event.

But one of my family (Traffic police - rare breed now) had a demo of a new speed gun , that calculates the speed of more than one vehicle at same time and distance between them and if safe for that speed ....now how clever is that ?

That was tested here years ago.

You must be joking everyone flaunts the speed limit i the UK and they are way worse then here for driving above the limit

I heard last week from someone who was caught for tailgating. 'Apparently', he was only '10 meters behind' on the Autobahn. Received a 3 month ban and CHF 400 fine. There must have been more to it of course.

That's a hefty punishment and makes me hope that tailgating won't be enforced by cameras since they can't distinguish between dangerous tailgaters and situations where someone pulls into that nice safe gap you've left between yourself and the car in front making you an instant tailgater...

Sorry, too late. There were media reports in 2011 (in German only, sorry) about the police in the Canton of Berne deploying such a camera system.

EDIT: Another, more detailed report: Link

10 meters is a safe distance at 20kmh, ideally a gap of 2 seconds should left (56m @ 120kmh)

For Switzerland the fine is low for such bad driving.

haha, there is also drivers following the one faster that this car gets flashed and them being ok as the camera cant capture both that quick.

One point to note here about tailgating is it is proportional to the age, size and country of manufacture of your car. I experienced this when changing from a Mercedes ML or an old Nissan Micra work a cheap runabout, same route, same time, same speed 10x the problems with tailgating, getting cutoff ect. Maybe they figure it is humiliating to be behind a Nissan or it just won't hurt or cost that much if I hit it.

11 years later and drivers like you are still existing… You are the worst offenders IF you are driving this slow on the left fast) lane. So many Swiss drivers are, for absolutely no logical reason, hogging the left fast lane by driving UNDER the speed limit and often even when there is space on the right side! Do you guy realise that in Switzerland, when you do that not only you are creating a traffic but also no one can (or shouldn’t really) overtake you from the right side because they would get fined?! The right side should not be faster than the left side, so we all get annoyed and stuck behind drivers like you.
Going 95 in 100, means that you are going 90! In fact, accounting extra allowance, you can go up to 110. The difference is 15! On 120 you can go up to 132/3, on 80 you can go 88 (though I’ve seen 90, I don’t risk that), on 60 I go 66 (maybe 67 is alright, again I haven’t tried that), and on 50 I go no more than 55.
Swiss definitely dont commonly tailgate, if they do, you are driving too slow but there is occasionally some :peach::hole:. If you follow what I wrote, you don’t have to worry about tailgaters or the :peach:s.
But PLEASE for the love of life, Swiss drivers!, move to the right lane as soon as you finish your overtaking!

*French, Germans might do it too, but the French deserve a gold medal for tailgating!

No thanks. I’m not one of those people who stays in the outside, or middle lane but I’m not going to follow your anal recommendations for driving speeds, preferring to keep my eyes on the road rather than the speedometer.

Perhaps if you feel that other motorists get in your way, you should leave five minutes earlier on your journey, or take public transport.

Welcome to the forum!

I rely on my GPS device for speed estimates.

Unless you are taking the next exit and are signalling right.
