Im looking for the top 3 most affordable (non-touristy) department stores to buy mens clothing e.g. brands like Tommy Hilfiger Timberland etc. I assume that would exclude the Bahnhoffstrasse?

thats gonna be really difficult.. i suggest this place but its quite a drive.. the brands that you requested are pretty tough to find a bargain around zurich area.

There's a TH flagship store on Bahnhofstrasse, you could try there. Globus will carry those brands and you pay the appropriate price for them.
When it comes to department stores, I like to go to Manor, it carries the widest range of sizing and is reasonably priced. Globus is also quite good, I just wish they would stop shifting all the stuff around. I really hate Jelmoli, the layout of the shop drives me mad and the shop assistants can be incredibly snooty, with the prize for most insulting reply going to the lady who answered my asking for a pair of size 44 trousers with "Our usual clientèle usually make sure they do not require such large sizes, so we don't carry them". Seriously. Its prices are also usually higher than you pay for the same thing everywhere else.
If you want loads of choice in one place, you could make the trip to Glattzentrum.

Personal advise- Don't waste your money on crappy labels like Tommy.

There is Globus Outlet located in MediaMarkt building in Dietlikon. It's not that big but they have selections of brands sold at the usual Globus (incl TH and Timberland). And everything is half the retail price. Depending on luck, you might get nice, good bargain there.
Anyone for Esprit? There is an outlet in Dietikon industrial area. It is very cheap there. Shirts can be as low as Chf6 .

Funny enough, I was just noting to myself how many Tommy labels I see on the streets of Geneva. The past few years, I saw Tommy rarely on the US East Coast and thought it was passé. The stuff here does look more conservative though. The Tommy clothes I saw in California in late 90s looked like walking advertising with 10-inch-high 'Tommy' letters or logos.
