Seems like there was a tornado in Zurich lake today !
I never heard about Tornados in Switzerland before this...
I saw a much smaller one on the Zurisee a couple of years ago, but this is much more impressive.
What area of the lake was this I live in wädenswil
Wow! I had no idea those were possible here...
I grew up in the Midwestern U.S. and remember always having fears of those when I was little.
While we're on the subject of tornadoes, this is a really good film -- as long as you can deal with the accents. (I saw it at the Zurich Film Festival last year):
Amazing !! Would have loved to see this one !!
Ever since I've been a child I wanted to see a real twister. So far I have not been (un)lucky.
We used to see "dust devils" pretty often when I lived in the desert in Southern Cali, some a similar size to that "water spout" pictured in Lake Zurich. Sometimes we'd see "sisters" twisting around each other - it was pretty neat, thankfully they weren't big enough to be very dangerous.
I've seen a couple of times that there have been rogue winds that come sweeping down the mountains at gale force though, flattening trees and ripping roofs off houses. It's scary and unpredictable really, which makes it even scarier to me. I think the land here in general though isn't flat enough for tornadoes to get really bad or travel far, even if and when they have a chance to form. That's not to say it's impossible, just that it's less likely because of how mountains disrupt / alter wind patterns.
This sort of thing is interesting enough that it makes me wish it was more interesting - interesting enough to sit through all the boring science and math classes (which are not my strong subjects) required to really study meteorology "properly".
My family and I survived an F2 in Florida a few years ago. While it was one of the scariest times in my life, I'd love to see one during the day.....from a distance.
Amazing videos!
There was a waterspout over the lake last year, too, as I recall. Down near Pfaffikon. Nothing like the twisters I grew up with but, still, interesting times in the weather department. Greenland is melting like crazy as last week there were 4 days of above freezing weather and record melt flow (along with the calving glacier) in the coldest part of Greenland. The previous 12 years had only seen 4 days above freezing. I don't care what you want to call it, but things are getting pretty dramatic in the climate department and if Greenland keeps melting like this, we'll all wish we were on an Alp somewhere...
We saw this yesterday from Kilchberg! We had guests that wanted to visit Thomas Mann's grave, and they were all preoccupied looking in the wrong direction. I, nautally being distracted, saw it and dragged my boyfried over to ask him what that was. (as a Texan, I was naturally VERY concerned and had never seen one on water before) It turns out they aren't that dangerous here, and don't move that quickly (I was told, don't quote me here). It lasted a few minutes, and needless to say the point of interest changed very quickly for our visitors. We really had a great view of it forming and dissapating!
Wow!
I passed by this place two hours later, but it was already clean sky... I missed all interesting
