Toshiba HD-DVD player - 299?!?

If anyone is in the market for a cheap HD -DVD player then InterDiscount is selling what I assume is the HD-E1 for 299 (down from 499) - or at least at the Seedamm center it is.

It does only offer 1080i as the maximum (so not true full HD) but for those with 720p-capable plasma and LCD TVs, it does not seem bad.

Anyone else think this is worth it now?

That's a very good price, alternatively you can get a PS3 relatively cheaply now and it's full 1080p.

Not only there. it is 299 everywhere at any Interdiscount.

you can have one from 299 from netto24.ch including your choice of 7 free HD-DVDs.

I was tempted to buy one, but I think I'll wait to next year and see how the market evolves

the standard DVDs look great on my 50" plasma. so that is enough for now

edit : went to netto24, and that offer is now sold-out

On the HD vs Blu ray thoughts, I reckon it's worth waiting a year to see what happens.

It's still very unstable and both formats have a lack of titles out there. I own a few blu ray disks, but the price of them to buy is unbelievable unless you source from the US (Region unlocked still at the moment, wonder how much longer that will last?)

If you like playing games aswell go for the PS3.

I personally have a PS2, an XBOX and a Wii. I don't need a PS3, trust me.

This would be to connect to a 720p projector and the movies are cheaper than Blu-ray. I would buy in the knowledge that the format war is certainly not over - but my appetite for HD is growing.

Actually, I could simply just buy a PC HD-DVD-ROM for half that price and use Media Center to play the content. Thanks for making me think!!

Actually this is what I was thinking to do also, get an HD-DVD drive for my PC and so I can rent for now the HD-DVDs.

The only problem I have is that when I connect my PC to the plasma I get 1:1 pixel to pixel resolution, but as the plasma pixels are not square but in 16:9 shape then the image is flatenned.

I can correct this but then the quality is not as good as with the 1:1 pixel mapping.

how this works with your projector ?

My projector looks good; I've tried both DVI and VGA connections and see no difference. The ATI card supports more options for the second display (projector) so I've got it running in native resolution for the projector (effectively 720p).

It looks nice with BBC-HD so I assume it'll look nice when I use MC to play HD-DVD.

144 francs too

It was said more from the point of someone not owning a HD/Blu Ray device at all. There still a fair way to go. Weren't there rumours of a dual disk at one point?

I'm about to buy a blu-ray burner for my pc, now BD+ has been sorted

The Tosh is very much a first generation machine. The thing that puts me off is that it is sluggish, about a minute between putting a disk in and anything happening. I know this doesnt bother some people but it bothers me.

I took the plunge and got the HDDVD add on drive for my xbox 360. This was the cheapest way into hd for me at gbp 90. The xbox 360 is great but a noisy old bugger so i am ready to take the next step sometime.

Rumours of dual players are not unfounded. Samsung for example are bringing out one by early next year. However, currently dual players tend to cost almost as much as buying both a hd dvd player and a blu ray player. In my opinion this should hopefully change next year and we should see some more harmonisation.

My format war money is on there being more dual players. So far, its seems to be a stalemate.

So far I am mightily impressed with what my hd dvd player can do. The picture really is superb, and since i have a HD panasonic projector similar to Lob, it makes a great big difference on a big screen. I also like the extra functionality like how the menus at the front of dvds are normally a bit nicer, and how the subtitles are crisper etc etc

PS3 for Blu-Ray & a seperate HD DVd player is the option that I am going for ... Dear Santa

Could they be selling them so cheaply because no-one wants one? Blu-Ray is outselling HD-DVD 3-1 in Europe: see here for details.
