My husband and I just moved here (Basel) from the US, he is a native of Switzerland but has lived in the US for quite some time. We brought our US purchased Nespresso machine here but we are having trouble finding a transformer for it. Does anyone have any idea where we can find one in Basel?
You basically need a 110 Volt > 220 Volt transformer. Nothing unsafe about using one in my opinion. I have a few around my apartment that run various US-appliances ... DVD player, blender, etc.
I did a search on ebay and found a few for sale in Germany and France ... shipping shouldn't be too bad. For example:
Basically you need a "Spannungswandler" AKA "step down converter" 220 to 110 Volts that allows you to plug your Nespresso 110 Volt US plug in on one side and the other side goes in a Swiss 220 Volt wall socket.
Edit / afterthought: If you have more than 1 US device (like in our case), attach a US power strip to the converter and voila, you got yourself a little 110 Volt outlet situation. Make sure you don't exceed the maximum Wattage though ...
I agree. The specs on my Nespresso machine state 1260 watts. That would mean a big transformer and they are expensive, not to mention the space this will take up in your kitchen. There are lots of sales on Nespresso machines, particularly the ones that are not the latest models. Here you can see the line up of machines and the suggested list prices. You can search in English.
To be safe, make sure the machine has a CE Mark symbol on it with reference to 110 - 220. I'm 99% sure it will but be safe. If yes, the machine will work just fine with a converter that you can purchase for 25 CHF or so. I have purchased probably 10 of them at FNAC.
I am 100% sure that the transformer you bought from FNAC for Fr. 25 will not power a 120/240 volt - 1250 watt coffee machine. These small tx's are made for up to 1 ampere output, unless there is huge sale and change in power consumption that my electronics books have not taught me...
