Transporting furniture on the train?

I've been buying individual pieces of used furniture through Ricardo and other sites, and I don't have a car so I was wondering about moving pieces on the train since sometimes the purchases are an hour or two away. I'm not talking about anything huge like mattresses or couches or wardrobes. But something like a small cabinet or coffee table - these are things that I can easily carry, so renting a car to transport them would be more expensive and stressful for me than taking them on a train.

Does anyone know if there are rules about what you can't bring onto a train? Also, is it considered bad form to use the train to move large-ish objects? I've certainly seen people bring large items onto trains- huge suitcases, sporting equipment, large boxed items from IKEA, so I'm guessing the items I'm thinking of wouldn't exceed any size limitations. But I also don't want to get tsk-tsk'd by passengers or reprimanded (or fined?!) by conductors for using a passenger vehicle to transport "cargo." Anyone know about this? Is this a no-no?

I don't know about "rules", but I've moved big things by the SBahn, trams, and buses - most recently a small chest freezer and kitchen trolley. Don't do it during rush hour and ignore people's looks

an antique chair from one end of the country to the other on bus, tram and train. And then finally funicular.

What do I win?

Can I join in?

I have travelled on SBahn and tram with live Christmas trees taller than me (twice), and as a family of 4 we did the same journey near enough with 4 garden chairs, the 2 kids each sat on 2 chairs stacked together in the pram/pushchair/wheelchair space (no prams/pushchairs/wheelchairs on the same trains as us that day, fortunately, otherwise we would've shifted out of the way).

Good luck and anowheels is spot on, try to avoid travelling when it is busy, and catch NO ONE'S eye.............

Hobs

Thanks, everyone! Good to know that at least some people have done this without getting kicked off the train or getting too much of the side eye. Yep- definitely would only considering moving something during low-traffic hours. Not only would I not want to wrestle furniture onto a crowded train, but I can't even imagine the dirty looks I'd get if my decrepit secondhand nightstand was blocking a seat or constricting someone's standing room
