Don’t expect many of you plan on taking Eurostar to UK in next few days but the BBC is reporting serious disruptions due to two deaths on the high speed tracks and theft of copper wires.

Doesn’t bode well for any future Swiss - UK high speed trains.

Yet again the Lausanne-Geneva rail connection is severed affecting all long haul operations to other Swiss cities. Caused by football hooligans throwing fireworks on the tracks the Lausanne -Renens sector is closed until 4am tomorrow (Feb 17).

Apparently someone threw a firework from a moving train with football “fans”. Since cables are on the surface due to extensive railworks, a damned firework burned cables indispensable for communication and control.

This is safety related. This could cause a train crash.

EDIT, forgot the news article: Chaos à la gare: «Il aurait pu y avoir des dégâts humains» - 20 minutes

As people can’t seem to be trusted with fireworks here, in bars and on trains in particular, perhaps it would be better to limit their use to formal displays.

Have they already banned it? Maybe I didn’t notice, but they didn’t seem to have fireworks on sale at the usual places I saw in past years (temporary tents set up outside the local Jumbo).

Some retailers have decided not to sell fireworks any more due to growing public feeling against them but it’s not illegal.

They can only legally be sold here on certain dates of the year so these ‘fans’ must either have hoarded them or bought them elsewhere.
People don’t normally just randomly walk around carrying fireworks so there must have been a certain amount of planning involved.

No. There is a vote coming to forbid noisy fireworks (not all), earliest second half 2026.

not sure if this is posted elsewhere, but there will I’m sure be knock-on effects from the train derailed by an avalanche near Goppenstein this morning. Five injured as avalanche derails Swiss train - SWI swissinfo.ch

It appears that the RE1 Berne ~ Dommodosola is only operating as far as Goppenstein and v.v.

Trains still very limited between Lausanne and Renens, still many cancellations. Allow extra time for your journey. According to CFF only two trains an hour will run between these two stations.

I’m confused, and worried about people arriving in the next day or two, the warning says
“the Lausanne–Renens line (on the Lausanne–Genève and Lausanne–Yverdon lines) is severely affected in both directions.”

Can someone who actually knows the lines clarify whether this is affecting trains from Geneva running eastwards? into Valais and beyond?

I think it’s affecting the traffic in the sense of reduced capacity. When this happens, ICs (intercity) or IR (interregional) still work, but probably local ones (S) are cancelled.

Check the SBB website for full details. No way to learn what to do without checking the specific train status.

EDIT: I was wrong. No trains between Renens and Lausanne. Maybe, it will be reopened by Wednesday morning. For now, buses between Renens and Lausanne.

Geneva to Valais YES. A bus transfer Renens - Lausanne is required.
The Geneva - Zurich line which goes via Yverdon is not affected, but everything scheduled to go via Renens or Lausanne is.

Answering my own question, ,via the sbb chatbot " Yes, trains from Geneva to Aigle are affected by the delays between Renens and Lausanne due to vandalism. The restriction is expected to last until at least February 18, 2026, at 04:00. You should allow for delays and possible cancellations on this route.

For more details, you can check the rail traffic information here."

I know two people who did the bus transfer today. Apparently lots of information, in three languages, given on train and lots of people on platforms and bus stops to help people along. You lose about 30 minutes so plan accordingly.
