Does anyone have experience traveling with their dog on the public transportation system in Switzerland. I wanted to know how common it is and how dog friendly the Swiss are when it comes to taking the pets on public transportation.
its very common. i travel everywhere with my dog, and shes not that small. ive traveled from zurich to lugano on train and ride the bus with my dog everyday. you'll most likely see other dogs on the public transport.
you must buy a ticket for them. pretty much everywhere has a sign for either adult, or children/dogs. its the same price for a child as a dog. only difference is a dog doesn't get a seat.
but i would have to say switzerland is the most friendly place for people to travel with dogs. dogs are allowed almost everywhere, but grocery stores.
have fun with your dog in switzerland
On the Zurich local network, dogs, cats and other small animals travel for free if they are carried in a basket or a bag, otherwise they have to have a 2nd class ticket or a special season ticket.

For the national rail network, see here (in English) :

In particular: http://mct.sbb.ch/mct/en/reisemarkt/...peziellega.htm It's a GA for dogs! How cool is that?
We also frequent the Zurich-Lugano Cisalpina with our Labrador. Most people don't mind having a well behaved dog nearby.
On trams and Busses in Zurich, we also try to use the back area or the middle where strollers/prams go. No problems so far...
We see other dogs all the time, so no worries. CH is a very dog friendly place.

Well behaved being the big proviso. If your dog is well trained and above all quiet, you can take it almost anywhere - public transport, shops (which don't sell food) - even restaurants as long as you have it on a leash. I saw a small dog recently sitting up on a chair at a table with the owner. I've also seen waiters bring out a water bowl on a hot day so fido can can share in the apeĢro. Expect a different reaction though if your dog is a bit of a lout, "enthusiastic" or "overfriendly" around strangers or barks. Ditto if he cocks his leg or worse whilst strolling down the Bahnhofstrasse.
i agree peeing on pedestrian street gets some bad looks. best to make sure your dog goes on the grass and you have a doggy bag to pick up if its #2.
as for well behaved. i see a lot of dogs that not well behaved at all. most bark like crazy and owners do nothing. when i meet people with dogs they ask "is your dog male or female" as they think the sex depends on if the dogs get along. but i tend to think if the dog is well trained it shouldnt matter what sex it is. maybe this is just in the italian region...
Thanks everyone for the good information. I'm happy to hear traveling with her should be ok. Do dog areas/parks or any areas for that matter have #2 bags at a despenser or do you have carry your own?
A lot of the doggy bins have dispensers attached to them, but they're not always stocked!
most parks and towns do. theres about a million dog bags dispensers around lugano. but you may just want to carry one or two extra ones with you.
youll also find a lot of swiss germans tie trash bags to their dog leash. its like a trend or something. also has anyone noticed swiss people carry their dog leashes like horse reigns? its funny lol
If your traveling in Switzerland with a dog than your in luck because in Switzerland they except dogs everywhere! In hotels, restraunts, taxis, shops e.c.c
Don't go with public transport, take the car for a real adventure..!
It's a great country to have a well-socialised dog as most of the dogs are pretty well socialised in Switzerland. There are organised puppy playgroups for socialising and training (minimising neurotic behaviour), I was delighted to discover.
At the Cham lake park in Zug canton, it's quite relaxed - dog owners often let their dogs off their leashes in the more remote fields, as long as they listen to your commands and don't go nosing children and babies.
With 3 labs I should have shares in robbi-dog!
I would suggest you tie a couple of bags to you dogs lead, then just replac as you deposit a full one, that way you won't get caught out. Also handy to have some baby wipes handy to....it's so revolting when you get a bag with a duff seem
