Tree removal with stump costs?

Of course this can very from region to region, but this is in Schaffhausen specially. We had a quote for 4 large trees to be cut (no nearby houses really yet) and stumps removed at 1.5k per pop. Does that sound reasonable?

Sounding reasonable isn't always the same as the going rate.

Having been quoted 400CHF and 12,000CHF for the same work, it would be prudent to get a second quote at least but it may cost you.

Alternatively, providing as much info as possible including photos and measurements (a plan), you could try getting a range of quotes from somewhere like Renovera.ch

Hopefully someone else will come along with some real figures for real tree removal they have had done.

Does the quote include a credit for the subsequent sale of the wood?

I had eight trees removed a couple of years ago and got such a credit.

The price before the credit was ca. CHF 1,000 per tree not including stump removal but including a huge crane as the trees had to be lifted over some other trees.

The cost depends on the size and type of tree (obviously!) if they are large and the wood is of value then it will be cheaper. Our local farmer organized and cut ours as he could use the wood, can't remember the price but about a quarter of the offer from a gardener.

How large are the trees?

Our neighbors have a large(ish) evergreen yew tree that they want removed and the owner of a garden company recently quoted them 1,000 CHF to remove it. The tree is about 6 meters tall by 5 meters wide.

We're talking maximum height for birch and pines in Switzerland. Maybe 20m, well at least I think.

Buy a chainsaw.

I think you'll need a bit more equipment than a chainsaw for a 20m tree!

Yeh! Chaps, gloves, safety glasses and helmet. Perhaps a sledge hammer and wedge if it's stubborn.

....and a certainamount of knowledege

I didn't say there is zero risk of something falling on a neighbours house, say if the tree fell the wrong way then I suppose it could reach the neighbouring house. But there was no house at least directly under the tree.

Then all one has to do is yell "Timber".

Sod the house, think about yourself, i know somebody who had experience in such things (a farmer) who's been in a wheelchair for last 40 years and will remain so.

He went quickly one lunchtime to cut a tree down for a friend.....

We had an 18m Black Pine removed from our garden by Helicopter for Fr 4'200. The 'copter was active for about 40 mins. The whole job took 6 hours from start to finish (including lunchbreak). Stump removal took 2 hours the next day.

I don't think RobBob factored that in when he said you only need a chainsaw.

Out of interest, what did they use to remove it? I've removed smaller stumps with a ratchet/strap method.

They had a giant grinding machine, like this .

The 'copter was cool, we were the talk of the village for a few days!

We just had 20m tree felled outside our building a couple of weeks ago. Done by the municipal forester who was able to fell it to fall directly into the road. The guys downstairs, in whose part of the garden the tree was located, deliberately had it cut at bar height (to put his beers on). Forester brought a big lorry with gripper crane to take away the branches and collect the trunks in one place for a couple of guys in our building to cut into firewood (split between the owners who need it). Cost of tree felling by the municipal forester was CHF 650 (between 5 flats). I imagine the cost would have been higher if the stump had needed to be removed.

OTOH some friends had two trees removed a while ago, but as they live on a steep terrace, helicopter was needed, and the cost ran to about CHF 12k.

So it can be quite reasonable, or hugely expensive, depending on the location/scenario.

Well it ended up costing 6.2k as part of a larger project of concrete/basement work. There was also other smaller shrub/tree removal also involved in the process and I was nice enough to have them remove a large stump the neighbour had there also which he wanted done eventually also. So I think it was reasonable since it included some other related work as well.

I assume you had the approval of the commune/gemeinde before cutting them right? One of our neighbors was sued for removing a tree. Practically, all the large trees (bigger than 30cm in diameters, I think) are registered in the commune plans and might create big headache if removed.

This was approved by the previous land owner also... We see they have been damaged by the winter storms in the last 5 years, so frankly, they could not have remained.. I really feel sad about it..
