Trump hits Switzerland hit with 31% tariffs

Lower fuel prices mean the US’s trade deficit with Mexico, Canada and China will increase further. These three countries receive most of US exports.

Actually good news for the economy.

USA is a global mafia. Always was actually.

Could not have put it better.

“But we won’t take any countermeasures until the situation has been thoroughly analyzed.” Schweiz Bundespresident. In other words you dont have a fuckin’ clue. But that’s to be expected.

"Shit. How can they have a psychopath running the country.

The entire planet is a world of mafias. Every continent has their fair shares. Unfortunately one must, if possible, go with the lesser evil.

What are you talking about? The Swiss have nothing to do with Trump’s actions. They are simply caught up in the mess like the rest of the world. The Swiss decision to wait, IMO is a correct one. I am certain they are quite busy at the moment putting their diplomatic ways into action behind closed doors.

The Swiss are generally a few steps behind. They have to wait for the EU first.

Decision or compulsion to wait?

The ONLY way Trump will remove tariffs is if a country manages to negate their trade surplus and even then he wants 10%. What he is asking for is simply impossible to deliver.

I understand that the EU last week offered to cancel all tariffs for US goods. Apparently Trump didn’t even want to talk about the offer as it would not solve “His” trade deficit problem.

Doesn’t mean that much as average EU tariff on the US is pretty much the same as the pre-Trump US tariff on the EU, both just over 1%. Despite the orange whinging this was never an issue.

Anti-EU feelings yield interesting outcomes. EU is bad, US is freedom…we better enjoy freedom with larges fries and a 32 oz Coke.

Switzerland relies on the principle of hope. In January, Swiss President Karin Keller-Sutter (61) said on SRF’s “Arena” that one doesn’t have to take everything Donald Trump (78) says literally. In February, on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference, she praised the anti-European speech by Trump’s Vice President J. D. Vance (40) as liberal. Since Trump’s tariff hammer on Wednesday evening, Keller-Sutter has been “disappointed.” The Swiss President sounds as if it were a matter of unrequited love. The Federal Council’s hope of holding a special place in Trump’s heart has proven naive. Particularly bitter: Switzerland has been hit much harder than the EU, which Trump so hates.

The Lockheed Martin F35 jets will become a very sentimental thing around here. Well, one opinion from a guy who knows his way around money.

Philipp Hildebrand, on the other hand, was considerably more pessimistic – especially regarding the security situation and the future of transatlantic relations. Switzerland must make a contribution to European rearmament - among other things, the former head of the Swiss National Bank put the purchase of the American F-35 fighter jet up for discussion.

I remember voting against Switzerland buying new fighter jets.

As if you were a big fan before… :joy:

And I’ll vote against if again. Geographically Fighter Jets make no sense. Invest the money in Swiss/EU technology for smart weapons of the 21st century. Drones rather than manned planes. In large numbers rather than a handful. Jamming and other counter methods.

Cancel F35 contract and use the money elsewhere.

I’m just wondering if the prices of the the jets could go up because the jet is “American” but a significant fraction of the parts are not

Some parts come from British suppliers (BAE, Rolls-Royce). Other parts from Italy, GKN Fokker in the Netherlands and so on.

Of course, no tariffs would be charged the for British, Dutch or Italian parts for the jets assembled in Switzerland. But the overall development program costs in the US will go up with Prez Trump’s tariffs game and victims will be required to pay for the higher costs.

Damn, I should work but Trump’s tariffs are putting the Swiss identity under stress.

Talk to anyone in business and the pride comes from hard working and smart people adding value to raw materials from around the world and selling them with high quality at the right price. One big example is coffee:

Visit the Nespresso website and the pride is there:

The industriousness and entrepreneurship that made Switzerland so successful is causing issues these days:

Beyond the stereotype of politicians postponing decisions as much as possible, there is something more fundamental in Trump’s tariffs. They are questioning the foundations and identity of Swiss business.

Hope Switzerland can adapt.
