Trying to decide: Swisscomm or Cablecom

I am trying to decide between Swisscom and UPC Cablecomm.

I need phone, Internet and Cable.

I have heard that there are customer service problems with Cablecomm. I cannot afford not to have internet that functions.

What is the general consensus?

Is cablecomm a big risk, as the proce difference is huge

Thanks for letting me know!

Just moved to Allschwil, Basel-Landschaft. I went with cablecom (=UPC). Ordered through internet, the whole package was delivered the next day. Within a couple of hours I had TV, Internet (wireless) and phone, no problem! It's about 80 CHF per month (excluding the base rate, which in my case is included in the rent). I believe it's called 'smart combi'.

Not sure about their service, as I did not need it (yet). Good luck!

With Swisscom you don't need cable, TV comes in through the phone line. I used to have Cablecom; moved to Swisscom a few years ago because the British TV offering was better (this may have changed since, and you're probably not interested anyway ).

You hear good and bad about the customer service of both providers. I only ever had to call Cablecom once and got good service, likewise with Swisscom.

I have always had Swisscom and what I like is that you ring them if you have any computer problem ( not connection but operator error ) and they talk you through it and this is free.

So many internet providers do charge when you need them although I do not know if Cablecom are free.

Have never had any connection problems at all.

On paper Cablecom is waay better, but Cablecom isn't in every area, so you need to know you can actually get it before getting to carried away.

We are fairly happy with Cablecom, we have had issues but nothing drastic, or serious enough to make us switch. I know people that have had real prob's with both providers and people that switch both ways, so if your looking for an absolute.... I don't think you'll get one.

I've just switched from Swisscom to Cablecom.

I switched because I'd decided to get a TV (in addition to phone and internet) and Cablecom offered a much better deal on a combination package, because I wanted free calls in Switzerland, and because my internet connection had been playing up for months, and even a new modem hadn't resolved it.

I can't complain about Cablecom's delivery service. Although as others said do ensure you can actually get Cablecom... and be aware that you will have to pay the cable charges as well as the package deal.

As for Cablecom's customer services - well so far I've had to ring them twice. Both times I've found their phone menu options very confusing - so much so it took me about five attempts to find the right options for my problem. And also, if you're switching, their information about what services they do and do not cancel for you is poor until after you've switched. Oh, and in my case they failed to note I wished to keep my phone number.

BUT, once I got through to a human being, I found them polite, well trained and accepting that people who are upset may need special handling. I rang up and had a good 5 - 10 minute vent about their poor communication on the switching issue. Although actually as it turned out the lady at the customer service centre could have resolved my problem in 30 seconds, she waited, let me get everything off my chest and then calmly explained to me what the misunderstanding was and what I needed to do. Although she didn't apologise, I did feel listened to and reassured - and it turns out that the 'compensation' I had in mind is something Cablecom do automatically. And she also took the time to check that the rest of my account was set up correctly - which was when the transfer of my phone number was flagged as an issue.

In terms of the actual services - my internet connection seems to be better (hasn't dropped once this week), phone is fine. TV does blink out occasionally but I think that's the actual TV (second hand and old), not the media box.

You can check on their website if it is possible in your area

Just enter your street and post code on the bottom right hand corner.

The customer service issues are a thing of the past. The internet never forgets... upc cablecom has changed massively in the last 2 years, all for the better - I use the 100Mbps connection and the performance is awesome and the price beats Swisscom hands down.

Just like a Skoda used to be a crap car, it no longer is.

You would not judge a 2012 model Skoda (which I have) by the reputation they had in the 1970s.... (awful, my Mum had a Skoda then, it was horrible)

PS: upc cablecom can deliver internet, phone and multiple channels of HDTV, and analogue TV and analogue radio, all at the same time.

Swisscom cannot do that, and yet Swisscom charge more....

Another vote for Cablecom. We subscribe to the highest combi package and everything works flawlessly. My only annoyance is the slow responsiveness of the digital cable box when I bring up the "guide".

Otherwise, the 100 mbps internet if blazing fast. Never had it down for the past 9 months. Phone is great cuz I can call Canada without worrying about additional costs. Way too many channels to pick from as well!

Cablecom also seems to be better at negotiations. They'll get more HD channels (specifically German ones like Pro7, Sat1, etc.) in June. This is 6 months earlier than Swisscom.

Cablecom is my vote,

- 50mb internet

- Comfort package 150+ channels but great English channels

- Phone (But i dont use it since I have OOMa)

I pay 84chf per mo.

I use to pay 71/mo with classic cable+50mb+basic phone

I tried to move from Swisscom to Cablecom late last year and I found the Cablecom service to be appalling. A special mention for the woman in the Zürich office near the HB who was unhelpful to the point of rudeness.

In retrospect, the problem was that our request was unusual as our cablecom connection is blocked. Also contrary to their expectations, I was not willing to run and pay for two telephone and Internet connections concurrently for approx. 2 months.

I am sure we were just unlucky but we have ended up staying with Swisscom. The service is rock solid and the customer service has always been good. Admittedly, their infrastructure is now lagging behind Cablecom but hopefully if we ever see fibre optic cable in this part of Zürich, the playing field will be levelled.

Your profile says you are still in Canada, so you really need to see if your new apartment in Switzerland has a Cablecom connection or not. Also when considering price, don't forget there is a 27CHF/month Cablecom connection fee hidden in your buildings monthly utilities bill ("Nebenkosten"). If you take Swisscom, you can ask you landlord to block the Cablecom connection ("plombieren") and 27CHF/month will be removed from your nebenkosten.

Otherwise for service quality, it depends. With Swisscom, your data speed can vary based on how old the wiring is in your building, and how far you are from the nearest fiber switch. In my old building I could get 16Mbps max with Swisscom, and altho 15Mbps was required for HDTV, I still couldn't get it I switched to Cablecom mainly so I could get ESPN. I need my NHL games, and if you are coming from Canada, this might be critical for you as well . Otherwise, for data rates, with Cablecom, sometimes the speeds slow down a little in the evening, but with Swisscom the speed was always the same.

In general, I am happy with the switch from Swisscom to Cablecom. It is slightly cheaper, and speeds generally faster. Swisscom still has the best customer service in Switzerland hands-down, but Cablecom hasn't been as bad as the horror stories you read on the internet either.

I have Swisscom for internet and Phone, and Cablecom for my TV. Truth be told.... Having Cablecom has been a waste of money because I don't watch it. All of my Television viewing has come from iTunes and streaming content. But, that's probably because I'm not British and so the English-language package on Cablecom is completely not of interest to me.

i have cablecom for tv only, rest swisscom..

cablecom has big customer care issues true, they are trying to change it..

however swisscom is more expensive, but better service for sure.

if you dont mind 20-50 chf extra, go for swisscom....

Customer service is a disaster by CC

The hardware for TV from Cablecom is something from the last century.I'm speaking from first hand experience with Cablecom TV.This is the Cablecom recorder that is made for the rubbish bin. Go for Swisscom

Sorry its in German

I am happy with Cablecom, but I have never tried Swisscom at home.

We’ve always used Swisscom and have phone and Internet with them. The service has been excellent; no problems with switching the services from old house to new recently, they said it would be done on this day and it was. We get cheap evening and weekend calls (1Fr for an hour) to UK and US which suits us fine.

The other thing I’ve noticed on the few times we’ve had to ring them about something is whoever answers the phone always speaks English. I don’t know if they have a note against our name that says English only or what, but it certainly saves time against them trying to find someone else who speak English if the person you get through to doesn’t.

Are these like Orange and have a under 25/27 deal? Both have unlimited download packages and give you the exact stated speeds right?

I am with Cablecom since 2 years and works great. The price in Swisscom is ridiculous as far as don't need any costumer service so far...
