Turkey fryer

This has been asked before , but without resolution, so I thought I'd try again this year.

I'm looking for a solution to cook a turkey inside (we live on the 9th floor and have a loggia but not a balcony). I'd prefer not to lock up the oven, given all the other uses we'll have for it on thanksgiving day. I'm thinking an electric fryer (big enough for an 8k or so bird), but I'm open to other suggestions.

Any ideas on a solution I can get in (e.g. have shipped to) Switzerland? All welcome!

8kg? That is barely a chicken with an attitude!

Have you got a microwave?

You have two basic strategies:

1) Turkey sized to just barely fit into oven (10-13kg), veg etc on BBQ/in Steamer.

2) Cook the turkey the day before, carve and put on serving plates, On the day do the side dishes in the oven, warm the meat at the last minute, either in the oven or the microwave.

Another option is to do two smallish turkeys, one using strategy 2) above, the other on the day using the space in the oven for veg etc. That way you end up with a "presentation" turkey to carve, but nothing goes cold while you are doing the carving.

Do not fry a turkey indoors!

Far too dangerous. 40l of hot fat near a heat source, even electic, as a very BAD idea. I may do a lot of stupid things, but even I wouldn't do that.

Better, buy a large second (portable) oven.

This is what we have done - a portable oven like this:

Not big enough for the turkey, that must go in the built-in oven. (Well, even my 'normal' Swiss oven is still too small for a decent bird, I've had to settle for a tiny Euro turkey. ) The portable oven is used for the trimmings and whatnot.

But if I am doing a real old fashioned Thanksgiving dinner, I have to also use the outdoor grill/smoker. That's the only thing large enough to do a true turkey right.

I usually do a capon - fits in the oven and we like it better. But the portable oven is the way to go. Or cook in stages, which is dreadfully annoying.

Not sure I'd fry a turkey outdoors, either. I'm chicken. ;-)

Fried turkey is one of my favorite video topics

I have fit a 14kg in the oven here, but it was tight.

I have a Panasonic convection/grill/microwave that will fit a 6kg no problem, as we did that one year when all I could get was an 8 and a 6kg bird.

Green-bean caserole can be done on the stove-top, no problem. Pies I do ahead.

For the really enthusiastic fryers, the Savannah, GA Fire Department has some recommendations: http://http://www.wtoc.com/story/161...ng-safety-tips

Well you learn something new every day. I didn't know that frying a whole turkey was even possible.

I can only assume that Corbets means 'oven' and not 'fryer', because I have never heard of a non-commercial fryers that could fit a whole, 8KG bird.

That's because you Brits don't have Thanksgiving. You've probably never heard of a turducken either.

Yes, there are home appliances for deep fat frying turkeys much larger than 8kg, but you're also correct in that I meant to post something like "fryer / oven / whatever". I'm open to options!

What you've never heard of that ol' down-home tradition*, Trash Can Turkey?

* Generally only attempted once, on an alcohol-fueled dare, preferably with 911 pre-programmed into your speed dial.

But being serious, the kind of thing that (I assume) Corbets is looking for is found is the Butterball Indoor Electric XL Turkey Fryer:

(Never seen such a beast on this side of the pond, unfortunately.)

I have a similar panasonic too...it's very useful. Hate green bean casserole though. Meh. Time to stock up on cranberries.

And holy crap, meloncollie - an indoor fryer. Imagine that.

What the... you could roast an entire person in there. Actually, in the deep south, they probably have...

Oh yes I've heard of a turducken but we tend to call it a three bird roast.

Surely you don't deep fry those too?

Actually, if your going to do it, a chicken inside a duck inside a turkey inside an emu or ostrich.

Probably best to find an industrial oven for that.

You know, MC, maybe I'll just go the route of shipping a Butterball out from the States. I'll have to see if I can find a transformer that can handle 1650W, which altogether makes it a painful investment for once a year... but hell, you only live once (and for a lot shorter time, if you keep eating fried birds like that).

Deep frying a 14 Kg turkey? You training to be Scottish?

You could get two fryers and wire them in series... the motors would run a bit slower, but it would be cheaper that a trafo.

Not to mention parts of rural Pennsylvania.

Biggest cause of Thanksgiving house fires in the US. Lets see how many house will burn down this year from attempting this.
