I am writing to ask for an advice. I am non-eu, with permit C based in Geneva and working in Bern for some time already. I am planning to rent an apartment there, as the commute is becoming tough. My plan is to stay there for 3-4 days and be back to Geneva where I work from home 1-2 days. I am and will be based in Geneva, but will rent an apartment to be close to work. I am not sure if renting an apartment and having second address is possible and how would the procedure be.
Any advise in this direction is greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot.
You register where your primary residence is, not your secondary residences!
Case in point, my daughter will be living in Zermatt December 2022 to April 2023, but she is in the process of registering her legal residence at my place, despite not physically living here.
She did the same last year, but until the end of this month she has/had her own place a few miles away. She also has a rented room in Ascona.
When I moved to Ticino, I kept my place in Zurich for nearly a year, but moved my registration from ZH to TI.
First two years we were married, my late wife and I were registered in two different towns!
You will be what is called a Wochenaufenthalter in the canton of Bern (a weekly resident). You can deduct the cost of the 2nd apartment from your taxes, but you need to get this declaration from the Bern canton authorities.
You remain an official resident of Canton GE, but will need to get an attestation of this, to show to the Bern authorities along with your Bern rental contract.
I was in a similar situation some years ago.
However, check that you are permitted to work outside of GE, sometimes Non- EU is restricted to remain in the canton of work.
AFAIA you need to register in both, but with a different status. In OP's case residence and home in Geneva, WochenAufenthalt in Bern (i.e. return to Geneva for weekends).
Yes you can rent second apartment in another canton.
My main address is in Lausanne, my second address is in Zurich. In Zurich kreisburo I have also registered from Wochenaufenthalt (weekly commuter if not mistaken). And I am non-eu with student B permit, was doing my internship in Zurich.
I own a property in BL (for now) but will soon sign a rental agreement in Aargau to live with my partner.
How do I make the Aargau address my 'official/legal' address and my BL address my Wochenaufenthalter address ?
It makes sense for me to do this as I'll probably sell the flat in BL later in the year.
Or.. do I have to do it the other way around (i.e. is there some connection between owning/renting and 'official residence')
Also.. if anyone has any links to any relevant forms/websites.. would be grateful
Also.. if I understand correctly.. if I sell my BL flat in 2023 then my entire 2023 tax return is calculated as if I was resident in Aargau for the entire year ?
