Question for all you folks from the UK:

I'd like to order a duvet cover from a shop in the UK (for my US sized mattress and CH sized duvet) but am confused about the wording on the size chart. Can any of you who are familiar with UK sizing enlighten me?

Now, here is what the UK store says:

Double duvet cover to fit 200cm x 200cm

Kingsize duvet cover to fit 225cm x 220cm

Super kingsize duvet cover to fit 260cm x 220cm

How would you interpret 'to fit'? To fit the mattress/bed size, or to fit the duvet itself?

I would say to fit the duvet.

A double sized duvet is 200 x 200 in the UK so based on that I would say they mean to fit the duvet itself. ( a double bed in the uk is 140 x 190/200)

Yup, as everyone has said, that's to fit the duvet. Just imagine having a bed with a mattress measuring 260 x 220 cm...! A super-extra-wide bed is 2 metres wide at most.

So it looks like a US queen mattress is a UK king... so far so good. But my CH duvet is 240x220, so too large for a UK king but a super king would need a bit of tailoring. Hmmm...

Well, I did take the Muttley Crew out for our morning constitutional after posting, on this blustery snowy day. After which Hooligan and Heffalump made a beeline for the bed, the rest of the morning was spent attempting to coax them out from under the duvet. (The only reason the Belltie isn't curled up there too is that he can no longer make the jump.)

There are (number of dogs)+1 dog beds in every room of the house, yet where do I find mine sleeping? In our bed of course.

Hence the (frequent) need for new duvet covers.

A UK super-king should be ok for those dimensions I think. If you've got any loose bits, you can always just tuck the excess under the bottom end of the mattress! Unless you like an all-round overhang, in which case... I'm being of no help at all!

For anyone interested, we have used "King of cotton", a U.K firm for buying extra large and extra deep fitted sheets which we couldn't find here, well not at a price we would consider paying. They supply hotels and b&b's so the colour range is very limited, but great if you like white! They also do towels, duvet covers etc.

They will take off the uk vat at source, but you do get a bill from the delivery firm to cover import costs and Swiss vat.

Duvet covers fit the duvet, not the mattress.

The problem is UK and Swiss duvet sizes are different. Here’s the Swiss ones:

Oh how I long for good old fashioned sheets and blankets - and bedspreads!

Alas, a queen sized blanket - the cozy thick Pendleton I grew up with and love - will not fit in my washing machine. So I am stuck with duvets.

But I found a rather nice William Morris print in the UK, hence this thread. If I can't have my heavy blankets, I can at least have something other than Swiss Neon or American pastel to cover my duvet. What is it with colors this spring?

You can buy large sheets in the UK.

For ease of washing I use an extra large quilt that I put inside an extra large duvet cover. It is not warm enough for the winter so then I have a feather duvet on top of it. As the quilt is thinner than the feather/down duvet it is easier to wash more frequently in either a large washing machine or in the bath.
