UK/CH tax - self-employed freelance side job in the UK, full time job in CH

Hey everyone,

I will be moving to Switzerland in January for a new 100% job, however I am trying to understand if I can keep my side freelance job in the UK and continue paying NI contributions. I am an EU citizen and only have the pre-settled status in the UK, but my husband is British.

Ideally I would like to keep my freelance job, it takes 5-7 hours a week and does not pay that well, but initially I thought I would only have to declare it here, pay Swiss tax, and it would do

Though, someone advised me that it's not how it works and the easiest thing would be to use a payroll company. I am just unsure if that would make sense for me, since the job is under 12k allowance and does not pay much.

Does anyone have experience with this or could recommend someone? I would rather have no fines from the CH tax authorities, as I have heard how generous they can be

Welcome to the forum.

It's been asked quite a few times. In fact, since you're freelance, it's relatively simple.

1. Search for ANOBAG on this forum

2. Continue as freelance, just invoice the company in the UK. Tricky thing here is that the "NI" authorities are unlikely to accept a one client business as self-employed.

3. Start a limited company (GmbH/Sarl) - downside is you have to put 20k into the business

4. Go through a payroll company

My guess is that option 1 would work best for you.

As far as NI goes, write to HMRC, tell them you're moving abroad and wish to make voluntary class 2 NI contributions. Your husband should do this too. It's quite cheap and can get you a full UK pension. Not a massive amount, but every little helps.
