Uk driving license

Hello all,

Quick question - do I need to do anything to be able to use my uk 🇬🇧 drivers licence here? Planning a road trip with a girlfriend and share the driving. Living in Canton Valais.

Thanks

How long have you lived here?

Tom

Since 9th November 2022

I don’t have a car here.

Thanks

If you’ve only been here since November you’re fine to dive here on your UK licence.

You can drive on it for up to a year once you become resident here, after a year you need to convert it to a Swiss one if you want to continue driving here.

No problem with the driving, but make sure you comply with the customs rules, motorway taxes etc....

You, a Swiss resident, can't drive your gf's foreign plated car in CH.

You're non-resident in the neighbouring countries, you driving her UK plated car there should be fine.

Not true - as long as she's in the car, he's fine to drive in CH.

Where did he say his GF has a foreign plated car?

I don't say she does, that's your interpretation.

What other interpretation is there?

If you don’t exchange it before the year is up, you likely will have to sit the exam and pass the test. It’s best to do it earlier than later.

It's five years to exchange it, it's just not valid to use after a year.

Tom

Tom is 100% right on this one. Most people erroneously think you have only 1 year to exchange, but the 1-year rule applies to driving on the foreign license. You have 5 years to trade it in.
