Does anyone know if it's possible to get UK MOT test done in CH?
I've got my car over here temporarily and don't want to drive it back to UK for the test.
Or does anyone know what the legal issues are if I do not get the test done and leave it to expire. The car is insured in the UK and I'm worried the insurance woule be invalid without a current MOT.
I doubt you'd be able to get a UK MOT done here, as the records for them are all computerised in the UK, and getting it done outside of the UK is unlikely to be an option.
Your worries are right - your UK car insurance would be invalid without a UK MOT, so you would be stuck if you needed to make a claim, and also you would be driving uninsured which is illegal in the UK (I'm not sure about in Switzerland). Also, depending on when your car tax is due, you also wouldn't be able to get this. The UK MOT records are computerised, so the authorities know if your MOT is due.
The other option to driving back to the UK is to get your car Swiss registered, but this may not be a real option if you don't want to make it a Swiss car (this is also expensive to do - look at the other threads on this topic in the Transport forum).
Actually, that question isn't at all silly - the EU and Switzerland have an agreement on testing. My parents had a car with a Swiss license plate tested in Hungary.
I had a similar problem and drove back to my local garage in the UK to get the MoT done (via Euro Tunnel). One way to reduce the pain is to identify a garage in Dover or Folkstone to avoid going extra miles.
are you seriously trying to tell me that a hungarian test is accepted by the swiss strassenverkehrsamt as valid and there's no need to test the vehicle in CH as well?
or do you mean they had swiss export plates and the car passed a hungarian test with these on it prior to being registered in that country?
Well, I think it is a silly question and only a link to official information stating that you can have the UK's MOT test done in Switzerland will change that opinion...
That's exactly what I'm trying to tell you. Apparently they'll only let you do this once and it's comes with a couple of requirement (has to be an official testing station within the EU / EFTA, costs a bit, only possible once)
I have never claimed it is. All I said was that I don't believe it's a stupid question as testing abroad IS possible in some countries. Also, nobody seems to know whether testing a UK vehicle here is possible. So the answer isn't "no". The answer is "we don't know".
what you're quoting is referring to the possibility of applying for permission( which they do NOT have to grant) in extrordinary circumstances and has absolutely nothing to do with the normal regular testing of a vehicle in switzernd.
and you'd still have to get it tested again in zürich.
As I said: you can only do that once. The MOT tests are periodical in Switzerland. Depending on the car the next test will be 2-4 years later and that one will have to be in Zurich.
