UK Self Assessment

I need to submit the UK Self Assessment - and looking to try to do it myself for once.

I saw a few SaaS services that support (e.g. goSimpleTax and FreeAgent) which charge around £60 a year to support this.

Does anyone have any experience with these?

My understanding was that you can’t submit your SA online from abroad. You have to do it on paper.

You can designate an accountant in UK who can do it for you, at a cost.

Might have changed since last time we did it

I ended up using https://www.123efiling.co.uk/

It’s a site that looks like it was designed in the 90s as a high school project - but it’s essentially the S100, S105, etc filled online. They then submit it for you.

Costs £15, so is substantially cheaper than my accountant… and about a fourth of the snazzier sites.

Will report back if something goes wrong.

I used to use the online portal to submit it from abroad even though that wasn’t really recommended or allowed. I then later used various online tools. There are many different providers and it cost me around £35.

Then I decided that I wasn’t going to waste money on that and just send paper forms now.

Phil - that’s the part that surprised me. Surely the paper forms costs HMRC more to process than an online submission? I’m surprised they don’t offer a digital submission directly.

That said, at £15 it’s not much more than the cost of mailing a paper form as registered mail, so I tried one of the online sites…

Well, I think you are able to do online submissions with HMRC, but they only cover the very basics. For example, they don’t cover the very common example of a non-resident landlord.

The NRL is exactly my situation.

This is the list of approved tools:

I stopped checking at the 123 one as it was cheap enough that I didn’t care :stuck_out_tongue:
