Animal rights organization: "We strongly urge people to stay with their animals"

"Poland, Hungary and Romania have temporarily removed the requirements for vaccination, blood tests and registration for animals. In Romania, a vaccination check is carried out at the border before the animals and owners can pass. They currently have a limit of five animals per person."

In a picture you can see a man carrying a rifle over one shoulder and in the other hand he is carrying a cat and a fish that he saved from a grenade-hit residential building in Kyiv. The local police also launched a rescue operation to rescue two parrots from the ruins of a residential building in Kyiv.

In the city of Lviv, on the Polish border, evacuees dumped their suitcases in order to safely take their dogs and cats in transport cages."

FYI for Zooplus users:

I just noticed that my CH Zooplus login works on the .pl site - and my points show up there as well. Presumably this will work with the other international sites as well, although I have not yet checked.

So if you are supporting a shelter in Poland (or Romania or any other country taking in refugee pets) with food donations to be shipped directly to the shelter, if Zooplus operates in that country this might be an easier way to do so. Your Swiss Francs go further, transport is easier, than trying to ship from CH.

(If you are a regular Zooplus customer you can easily navigate the local site even if you don't read that language, it's exactly the same as the others.)

If any of you have other local suppliers in countries taking in refugee pets that you can also recommend, please post in this thread.

The reply I got from the Federal Vet Office is just not clear!

L’OSAV est en étroite collaboration avec l’UE et les Services vétérinaires cantonales pour une procédure à appliquer. Les réfugiés ukrainiens qui voyagent avec leur animal de compagnie sont priés de contacter les autorités vétérinaires à l’endroit actuel si vite que possible.

We wrok in close collaboration with the EU and C/Kantonal vet services for a procedure to apply. Ukrainian refugees travelling with their pet have to contact Vet. authorities at the place they are asap.

I went to drop stuff off locally just now and was happy to see lots of likeminded people also donating pet food.

They were collecting from 15.30 to 17.00 and when we arrived at 15.40 they were already totally overwhelmed by donations and lots more cars were arriving.

The response has been amazing.

An update from Susy Utzinger Foundation over the current very worrying situation:

They are supporting three shelters in Romania, two in Poland, that are taking in refugee pets.

The are also in the process of starting a Patenschaft program for pets that had to be left behind in the shelters, whose owners are hoping to return. More info will be on the website in the coming days.

Thanks for posting this article, Sigh.

Those images are heartbreaking and uplifting at the same time. Heartbreaking to see the suffering, uplifting to see the good people who are working so hard to help.

As this war drags on it's important that we don't become numb to the suffering of all affected, both people and animals.

If you can, please consider on-going support to any of the groups helping, any group whose mission touches your heart.

These guys help in two ways: 1. They have small stocks in Switzerland for refugees to come and get things for free.

2. So far they brought 100 tons of donations to Ukraine, Poland and Hungary. Their next truck - which still needs to be fueled - will leave on June 27, 2022.
