Unemployment RAV First Meeting - Translator? [Basel]

I definitely wouldn't mind a German course...but those "how to answer the telephone" courses, yikes!

I am so grateful to the generosity of people offering to come along as a translator. I'm thinking about it now a bit stronger, based on TJ's info...perhaps I will need one after all.

Again, many thanks to all for sharing their experiences and knowledge!

Just started today a "Strategy Seminar" which is 10 full days over a few weeks. Targeted at "kader" (middle management) level people. Includes role playing under the eye of a psychologist. Will also have the HR manager of a private bank to give advice and answer questions. Hopefully it will have been worth missing Olympics, Glanz & Gloria, GZSZ and other worthy pastimes.

Now that sounds quite interesting!

And it's run in English - only happens a few times a year, I understand.

And I always wondered what they are doing with all the insurance payments when unemployment is as low as now... my company does not pay me Kader courses.

The missus is on the same course with you. She's the French bird.

If this is at place in Seefeld on Höschgasse, I did the same course in February/March. It started off alright, but in the end the best part of the course was all the people I met. Much of what we talked about was a waste of time and could have been done much more quicker in order to have time to work on more useful exercises.

Having others in your group help you identify your skill set can be a real eye opener though, if you have a good group. I would definitely recommend volunteering to go near the beginning so you have the chance.

The psychologist, however, was completely useless and totally got on my nerves.

H'm. Perhaps I should contrive to lose my job, just to join in the fun!

Cool, we're also on the same project team, might meet you some time.

Yes, it seems to be the same course - run by Schmidhauser & Partner? Thanks for the info! Hope it's not the same psychologist then...

Yes, thats the one! Do you have Max? I'm in the middle of moving and I've already packed all my application stuff, so I can't tell you the name of the psychologist who came.

An update....

I went for my appointment today, and it is a good thing a Swiss colleague offered to come along. The girl didn't understand English, and many of the terms were ones I just wasn't familiar with, so I would have spent much of my time looking things up in the dictionary!

Fairly painless, to be honest. I had all of my paperwork together and ready for them, organized and eager to find a new job.

Hopefully my assigned person will speak English, but I was told if they don't, they'll switch me around to one who does.

I found them willing to work with you, and happy to help. Let's hope the rest of the process till I find a new job is as smooth!

Great new then.

I found the RAV wanting to be helpful, but they are not really setup for higher end jobs. Great for general labour jobs, jobs in shop, restaurants etc..

But maybe that was just my experience with my local place.

I found them to be great, my RAV officer said he didn't really understand lots of what was listed on my CV but would do the best to find something half relevant, which he did.

I have heard people slate the RAV and say they are *******s etc, but these are the people I would expect to have a hard time, they want something for nothing.

I probably wouldn't speak a word of German if it wasn't for them, you can't slate people who are trying to help you.

I know that, my post was badly written, I wasn't implying you want something for nothing.

Had the psychologist in yesterday...I wouldn't recommend her to anyone needing a consultation. I think most of the class would agree with me on this.

Hi,

I also went to the RAV here in Basel.

However, the woman who I spoke with 1st only spoke German. However, the woman who dealt with my case ended up speaking to me in English. My Deutsch is rudimentary. I can speak somewhat BUT understanding what is spoken to me is a different ball game.

But I am happy now that I no longer have to deal with them...

I met with my regular person this week, and she spoke English well, and was extremely helpful. Not nearly as bad as the RAV reputation has it

Just out of curiosity but can the RAV force you to work in a job that has no prior relation to what you were doing. For example, you are an accountant with a chemical company, and now they ask you to go flip burgers or be a shop assistant in a shoe shop. thanks

I just finished a four month temporary job, and I thought it would be easy to sign back on with unemployment. But no, not so. I need to start over from the beginning - as if I had never signed up before. So...I again need to go and they suggested I bring a translator, that my earlier information wasn't sufficient.

Would anyone in Basel who speaks German reasonably well have time on Friday (5 June) morning to give me a hand with this interview? From the last time, I know things were asked that were beyond my German abilities, and I fear it will be the same again. Unfortunately, my colleague who was able to make it last time can't make it this time due to work commitments.
