I'd be really interested in hearing your experiences about giving birth, especially those of you who have had c-sections, in either of these hospitals.
I gave birth naturally at Unispital, and the experience was very positive. The nurses really seem to want to help you and the newborn, I appreciated the little details like giving me oxygen during the birth to help me keep going. The downside is the hospital is run by the university so there were students coming in and out, one professor with students in tow asked me if they could observe my newborn son and maybe use him for a demonstration. But the plus side is I believe they have the most technologically sophisticated equipment that you won't find at Triemli in case of any complications. Whatever you decide, good luck!!
I had some complications during my pregnancy last year and I had to stay in Triemlispital for 3 days. Luckily they could stop my early labour and I went back home and waited another 5 weeks. I found the doctors, service and installations there very good. It felt like I could trust them. I was very satisfied with the choice I made. I definitely wanted to give birth there. I meet the midwife and discuss with her all the details of the birth. What I wanted, what I didn’t want and how it would be. Everything was perfectly planned I was familiar with the installations and the staff.
On the day, when I called the hospital to announce that I was on my way to give birth, they told me they were full and redirected me to Unispital. It was very disappointing and a bit stressful. I had never been in the new hospital, I didn’t know what the facilities were like in there and these people didn’t know a thing about my so well studied birth plan.
My first desired was no induction, but as soon as I got to Unispital the doctor talked me into induction. I agreed because she scared me with the possibility of an infection, even though she wouldn’t tell me how likely it was to get an infection. She just kept saying I had to do it.
After 12 hours of induction, the real contractions started. Unfortunately it was my first baby and I didn’t know those where the “real ones, and the midwifes wouldn’t believe me because the machine wouldn’t register them properly. I wanted a drug free labour but instead they insisted on making me sleep because they predicted it would be a very long labour. Again under the threat of emergency C-section due to premature exhaustion I agreed to take painkillers. Now I know I was already in heavy labour , but nobody knew because the midwife in charge after the shift change also failed to measure my dilatation. “They have measured it wrong before” she said, “There is no way you were 3 cm before, you are only one”. And they kept insisting on the resting thing to save energy for the “real” work, I finally accepted the Epidural ( of course on the top of my birth plan was no epidural, but again they scared me with the C-section) . And Epidural guy was called. Thank God, right after they called him, I felt the urge to push and no long after I had my baby with me.
Some weeks after I went back to Triemli to do my first check up (because it’s closer to home) and the doctor said I should had gotten stiches. Sadly I have to say that I did ask the doctor in the Unispital to give me some because I also had the feeling that I needed them (even though that wasn’t in my birth plan)
I’ll definitely try to give birth in Triemli again next time. Hopefully I’ll be luckier and can stay there.
I have given birth three times at triemli. All of them very long labors (small complicatiions with all). The first an unplanned c-section. I have no complaints and thought i was listened too and they w ere always professional and careing. If you want any further info please feel free to pm me.
I gave birth at the Unispital and was very happy with the staff. I experienced several teams of nurses and doctors and all of them were very competent and helpful. One of my friends delivered at the Triemli and was also very happy with them.
Furthermore, I attended the course "Schwangerschaftsgymnastik" at the USZ and the parents preparation course + the "Rückbildungsgymnastik"at the Triemli and was happy at both places.
You can go to the "Informationsabend " that both hospitals offer and speak to them. Maybe it helps you with your decision.
My wife gave birth to our daughter at Hirslanden last year and after 6 hours of motoring her, our daughter had to be taken by ambulance to UniSpital for further monitoring and medication due to a very fast breathing issue and low protein blood count.
Our daughter was looked after for 14 days and we visited her every day while my wife stayed in the hospital. The nursing and care was amazing and they always provided all the answers to our questions for our child. There were several ups and downs in those two weeks but we were provided all the information and every step with clear info. We couldn't have got through that time with out the huge support the nurses gave to us and I'd thoroughly recommend UniSpital.

I gave birth naturally at Triemli and I would definitely recommend the hospital. I had a relatively long labor and had the opportunity to meet with a lot of the staff (at least 3 staff changes during my stay at the labor department and a lot more at the mother&baby department). They were all incredibly supportive and helped me through the labor and delivery, as well as with the care for my newborn and breastfeeding. I had only the basic insurance and shared a room with two other new mums and actually this turned out to be a very nice experience. If I have to I would choose Triemli again without any doubt.

My Wifey gave birth at Triemli last year, it was a very long and delayed labor (it took almost 20 hours), so we have seen all 4 shifts, different nurses, midwives and doctors. All professional, they know what they are doing.
Everybody is extremely friendly and trying to help as much as possible.
Delivery Rooms are huge and I think half of them (3 out of 6) are equipped with water bath, (acc to my wife, that was the most helpful and relaxing thing during the delivery)
I directly asked to the Head of Dept. if they are fully equipped in case of emergency or complications and it was confirmed. Do not hesitate to ask these questions on the Info-Abends (yes, please visit both hospitals before you make a decision)
There is only one thing I can really recommend, if you can, consider to stay in a private room whatever hospital you are gonna pick. If you have some additional insurance, or half-private etc.. there is a contribution even smaller amounts may help i.e. 100 chf/night etc..)
I remember it costs around 400 chf/night... probably stay period is around 3 days after birth.
My wife gave birth (naturally) at Triemli and we were also there along time, sent home a couple of times etc, the usual stuff. All the nurses, midwifes etc are really good and we felt good all the time, as if we were really being looked after.
I believe (might be wrong now) that in the main building (not the maternity building) they have an excellent children's unit where babies from all over the area are taken if there are any problems, which was comforting to know.
You also get the added bonus every time you get the train up the Uetliberg to point to the room and say "that's where you were born", which you don't get at the UniSpital.
Both are just fine. Firsthand: I had mine at Unispital and many friends at Triemli.
I gave birth at Triemli Spital. I was very happy with the staff, all very professional and nice. We had to stay for quite a while as I had a long labor - 3-4 shift changes and all of the midwives, nurses and doctors were very helpful and supportive of my wishes. The rooms are comfortable and well equipped. I could say only positive things about the hospital and would definitely recommend it.
