hello everyone, and thanks for hearing my plea.

first of all, out of solidarity, i would be happy if anyone in my situation could make use of this thread. so, feel free.

i am a student in the field of arts, i just completed the artistic highscool in ticino, the italian speaking region of switzerland. next stop, the zhdk. but here comes the first obstacle: the language. with my family, we figured out the best way to learn the language, save some money and accumulate experience + having a calm environment for working on my portfolio was to go live there alone for about six months. i set that up with a mate, but we both are having a big problem: the employment.

we are sending thousands of well-written emails along with our curriculums (and i assure, since i studied arts, my curriculum is a beauty, along with being complete with a decent work experience. guess i am not that good at my job as i think ) but it seems like there is literally no place free.

employment sites aren't of help, since the only places listed there ask for pluriannual experience or a specific professional formation. i don't even know what an "expert of risk strategies" is!

we don't have a qualification, since the artistic maturity by herself is worth as much as those horrible plastic garden gnomes you see around the city.

i have a bit of experience as waiter, factory worker and such. i speak italian, english on a decent level and my german is a solid A2.

does anyone was in the same situation? how did you got out of that? i would literally do anything in order to not rely on my family, that sadly isn't swimming in gold. names of industries or such who employ also non german-speaking folks would be of great use. really, i would even spend 8 hours a day cleaning toilets.

Try quick-shops (Coop-Pronto, Migrolino, etc), your knowledge of Italian and English will be in your favor, and your German will pick up.

Other possibility is bars and restaurants.

The Auslandschweizer-Organisation website lists a number of internet job boards and newspapers which might be useful. Jobs.ch and Jobagent.ch are two of the better ones:

As Switzerland enters into the Christmas season, there will be a number of temporary jobs available, such as gift-wrapping, packing, etc., which might be suitable for an Italian/ English-speaker.

RAV, the Swiss governmental job service, is required to assist anyone legally resident in Switzerland. You might wish to consider registering at the responsible Zurich RAV office:

Also, RAV should be able to supply you with a code for jobagent.ch This will allow you to search on jobs for "gering qualifiziert" and "englisch", etc.

Edit:

Cleaning crews are sometimes composed of one nationality, e.g., Italians, Portuguese, etc. This might not be a great way to learn German but it would be job.

Maybe try less exaggeration - thousands of emails? I doubt it.

Are you any good at making Cliparts and illustrations? I've bought people's electronic artwork for my own presentations and designing posters and invites for my mum, so that would be an option. Certainly not a lot of money but once you've done the design, it's done and multiple people can buy it so it could make an ok sum in the long-term. I guess it's a good skill to have anyway in your field.

Training and education. You're presently qualified for unskilled labour and are disadvantaged in so far as your level of German, at A2, is a bit low to be customer facing and while with will improve, you want to train up in something that is in demand.

What do you want to be when you grow up, as it were? Look at what courses there are, build up a portfolio if applicable and in the meantime take whatever is available until you get your foot in the door of such a trade or profession. Look at Italian restaurants is one thing I'd suggest.

Might help to build up a portfolio but he won't survive on that. Any kind of freelancing is slow at the start and will only really earn him pocket money - certainly not enough to pay rent and live on.
